Quads and Vegas

The Q6600 is not only dropping in price to $290-ish retail but also getting better. It is likely to overclock a wee bit higher and it will be made for higher temperatures so less worries.

I put in a reservation for one already but before spending the money I would really appreciate if someone who might have one could tell me what Vegas does with the cores.

I noticed that both of my cores on my Duo seem to work almost as hard on the Task Manager "Performance" Tab (Ctrl + Alt + Del) even if Vegas doesn't yet know how to max them out it is nice that both are getting used.

Has it been posted yet if Vegas uses the third and fourth cores at all?

Raylight will use up to 8 cores for rendering or playback. But it lets windows assign the cpu to each task, so if you have filters that are single or dual core only Windows will automatiically load up the other processors to balance out the load.

Weeeeeeeeeee....

Are you kiddin'? now that Green is working I will never preview without it!

I am already getting 24 frames without effects, it even holds up through some transitions... but only when the room is cold... summer is killing me...
I should get my cooling parts in today so we'll see if I decide to hold off till native quads get cheap...

hey MVB can you take a look at this thread if you get a sec?

All of the four cores are used if you render to raylight with vegas7. I get real time 1080 30fps preview with raylight blue and almost real time with 2 vegas effects...The setup is a raid0 and my q6600 is at 3.2 for now. The price for the q6600 has not dropped yet here in canada.I paid 600 something a few weeks back.....and i dont regret it...so at 290$....

Pierre I thank you so much for you reply! Between your opinion and MVB I will feel 100% competent at making my move. It really means a lot to me at this point of development.

Let me just verify Pierre, are you running XP-32 (with all updates)? How much memory and what timings and speed is it running?

And out of curiosity, what Mother Board are you using? What temps are you getting? And what kind of cooling setup do you have for your NorthBridge and CPU?

win xp 32bit sp2, 2 gigs of ram, i got the cpu @ 3.24mhz the ram is @900mhz.
I just got some generic dual channel kingston ddr667 so im not sure about the timing.
I got the gigabyte 965pds3 board. Im new to overclocking so i just played with cpu host fequency and memory multiplier in the bios and it just worked right away i left the ddr and cpu voltage control to automatic... Maybe i could get better performance if i fiddled with it a bit more. At full Load temp will max at around 62-3 and then come down to 56 and 58,@idle is 42. I use a thermaltake typhoon.
The north bridge gets pretty hot around 49-52. I just invested in 2 seagate 500g hard disk so i will wait a bit to buy a heatsink. Unless i render really long projects it wont be at full load for long so i dont mind the heat for now.
Theyre is one thing i dont get......i cannot always get vegas to
render at 100% load. Maybe some background task is preventing it. It sometimes gets stuck at 60%. Im still trying to figure this one out.

Vegas just acts all drunk when it comes to CPU usage if you ask me... it doesn't know which way to go... I am hoping 8.0 will be out soon and while it would be nice to get more features all i really want is work done under the hood...

So you have a multiplier "unlocker" BIOS... nice... you have the right kind of board... unfortunately mine will be stuck at x9... and it seems I will be limited to a 3.2GHz at best...

I would suggest you get a NB cooler if you ever encounter instability... It does sound like you might be looking at your motherboard's temperature not your North Bridge... touch it during load and you'll see what I mean if I am right... I hope you are right though, cause in that case you can get away with whatever you have on it now... nice OC you have going on!

I forgot to ask! Are you talking about "preview" quality and full screen?

3.2 is enough for me and you will probably be satisfied with that. Obviously there is always better and faster..hehe. I am talking about fullscreen at best setting. Btw i did an interesting experiment. I installed a linux based filed server called freenas on one of my old amd. Using gigabyte internet i can edit 720 24p over the network. Dragging the mxf file from the file server right into vegas.

Your right, im gonna try and touch the board and see were it heats up. As for now it seems stable maybe ill just leave it like this.

WHAT?!?!?!?! OMGZ!!!!

Best setting?!? Duuuuuuuuude!!!! Good thing your Mom didn't get you a Dell!

I WANT!
That should then mean you can view 30p flawlessly at Preview settings then right?

Is there anything else we should be taking into consideration to ensure I do end up with equal performance? Mvb, care to comment?

man... they keep saying 8-cores by July 2008... maybe I should wait till native Quads are out and cheaper...

such a hard desition... if I were a gamer I'd stick to a Duo at 3.15 for sure but I had my frame-rate drop to 21fps from time to time while working yesterday... and that was preview quality

I got proper NB cooling in so I am upping my RAM to 1000MHz but I don't know if I'll even see a small impact from that...

well if the q6600 really comes down to 200 something. i think it would be worth it. If it does what you need ,you wont need anything faster for quiet a while. I needed an upgrade badly from a dual core opteron so i could not wait for the price to go down more.

it is going down to $290 for me with a late August delivery... I am wondering if I'd be able to run Magic Bullet CC on the CPU and get 23.976... my GTS can handle up to 19fps but it boggs down to 12fps sometimes... so I guess SLIed GTXs might do it but that's $1,000 and a new PSU...

What about AE...?

Also, you said you can run a few effects and get real time 24fps full screen best quality... what effects are those?

just basic color correct in vegas. Ill run more tests tommorow. I dont use after effects so i dont know. I'll need to shoot some 1080 24p.The only footage for 1080 i have on hand is 30fps.
Maybe we could create a small test project that i could zip and put on my server. So we could compare the results more accuratly...

yea, I am game!

let's do it... shoot something with motion since that uses up more processor power than relatively still clips, perhaps start off with less motion...

strange, with 30p footage i get real time playback but with 24p i can only get 17 to 19fps playback and sometimes down to 12!.This doesnt make sense. Im not familiar with the 1080modes should i shoot 24pa or 24p? Last time my cpus were at 60% during playback ,now they seem to max at 28%. Maybe vegas doesnt only get drunk for rendering....
Anyhow if you were aiming at realtime on the preview setting it does work. The problem i have is at best setting.
I'll report back when i have more time for testing.

PA makes it easier for NLE's because it has the progressive frames available without the need for de-interlasing... gosh... I hope you shot at 24P and not PA.... and I hope that might be the reason...

Otherwise Vegas is a complete alcoholic and we are S out of luck

no, no, pa is the better one... so there is no improvement to be made... (wtf is aa? lol)

I am starting to think i should skip this generation of Quads at least till Vegas 8 is out and I get to test with the 64-bit support... (and hopefully a sober version)
