QT reference vs movie

I am outputting from avid and then encoding for dvd using tmpgenc.

I have tried outputting from avid using both a movie and a reference. Obviously the reference is much much faster - however when I encode that file the resulting mpeg has muted colors and some pixelation - if i do it with a QT movie and then encode it looks great. Why would that be - is there anyway to use a QT reference file - it would save hours of render time.

Make sure your color levels match for both exports. If your QT movie is set to 601 and yor reference is set to RGB it could cause this. Or vice-versa. Which option you choose depends on your MPEG encoder, and off the top of my head I can't remember which one TMPG prefers.

They are both set to RGB and the files look different. Any other ideas on this? SHould i try 601 for the reference to see if that helps?

I use this workflow a lot. In the QT Reference settings, set it up to use Avid DV codec and 601 colors. In TMPGEnc, there is a Special Settings area in the Quantize Matrix tab where you can set it to "Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601". That way the colors won't look washed out.

geomar - that makes sense but I cannot find that option - can you tell me specifically where it is in tmpgenc so I can try it - thanks very much
