PXW-X70: quick sunny test

Just watched the vimeo link - nice work. Would you care to share the picture profile please - really nicely balanced look.

Thank you!

The PP is PP6, which I think is exactly on the factory settings: detail was the only thing I futzed with, and it's on zero now.

For exposure, I set zebra to 100 then adjust the iris until there is no zebra in shot (or zebra only on things that are beyond help, like light sources or very sharp glare). This formula seems to be working well for me. For these shots I used the ND to make sure that happened around F6 - F11, which was mostly ND2. Shutter was 30.

Cheers!

Thanks! Yes, I see that mosaicing -- that's the H.264 macroblocks becoming visible. In fact it looks pretty terrible! But that's mostly just the compression Vimeo does for streaming. Download the original to see the real thing -- although there's some macroblocking there, too, but not as bad.

This is not visible on the camera clip. I've uploaded it here so you can see: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzUtug4YfU9IUVR4dVU5LWFpMzg&authuser=0 . The one you want is clip 18; the MXF is straight out of the camera, the MP4 is the same exact footage but in an MP4 wrapper.

Moving waves in shadows like that is a really severe test of H.264. I think the problem here is that particular clip was way under-exposed, so I had to push it a lot. Glaring water on black rock in bright sunshine is a bit tricky... ;-)

Thanks for pointing this out though, it was interesting to work out what what was going on.

Much better, I could definitely live with that. Would you think applying a Cokin gradual ND filter (P121) help better exposition on that scene? Thank you.

Possibly, but I think I just underexposed it. The problem is that I was trying to protect the highlights; but that shot has light reflecting off water, which is much brighter than the white water foam. I should have exposed for the latter and allowed the actual reflections of the Sun to burn out.
