OTHER: PX270 - Handle Mount Broke

So this happened on my first shoot with these the other day.

One of my guys attached a monitor on a noga arm and the mounting points cracked off inside the handle. Not really sure why this happened, but I had to remove the loose piece from inside the handle to move the evf around. Camera seems to work fine none the less. Think I am still under warranty? lol!

I do like the camera, but it does feel like they changed the materials these are made from since the DVX/HVX days. Lighter is always good, I just hope other sacrifices haven't been made and this is an isolated incident.

Wow. Simply crappy! Yes, lighter is great but hopefully not at the cost of durability. How heavy was the monitor & arm? Have they been mounted on other cameras?

I don't see weight being the issue here. I believe it happened during an adjustment. Even so, I've abused and even carried cameras by things attached to the top mount. Will be contacting Panny this week. It does't affect the performance of the camera, which is great since I have a couple shoots coming up. I think the whole handle might need to be replaced though.

I kinda got a good laugh out of it since it happened BEFORE we even started rolling on the first gig with it!

With this incident, they may append the op manual to warn about excessive weight. This is definitely a compromise of load weight & cost of material. Pressure is on to keep everything within $5.5K.

So I finally dropped my camera off for service. At first they were reluctant to take it under warranty and were calling it "abuse" which isn't covered. After I explained how many Panny cams I've owned over the years and this happened on my first shoot with these new cameras the senior guy there said they'll take care of it seeing as it's an issue that might need to be addressed on the manufacturing line.

He also said I would be getting the camera back with the upcoming hardware/software updates. I ask if it was just firmware but he wasn't sure. Is there a hardware update planned that we don't know about?

Go Panasonic!
