OTHER: PX-270 Power

Hello Listers,

As a new owner of a 270, I have begun to realize just how power hungry this fella is and am considering additional options for power. At one end of the spectrum, I could by a bag full of carefully sourced no-name batteries and a Dolgin two position charger and call it good. I've actually had pretty good luck with carefully purchased no-named batteries for my 170.

For what it's worth, using the same batteries, memory, and remote controls as the 170 was a consideration in the purchase of the 270. It is making for a not so expensive transition.

So for shooting on the hoof, IMHO, using the standard batteries is still probably the best option unless it was an all day shoot. That would require a bag full for sure. On a tripod, I'd even consider something like a Bescor brick or something similar.

Do you have an alternative power arrangement that works for you?

TIA, Grant

The Ikan batteries talked about here in the forum will give you 3 hours+ The camera does draw a lot of power (19.5 watts) for a handycam design.

A second for the Ikan IBP-D88 high capacity replacement battery. It's 8700 mAh compared to 5800 mAh for the stock Panasonic VW-VDB58 batteries. Not quite twice as much, but it feels like it in actual use. Mine has been totally reliable so far. I haven't owned it long enough to know how it will age. One (trivial for me, but YMMV) drawback is that it is also bigger than the stock batteries and sticks out behind the camera body an inch or so.

I'm also planning to try at least one of the Swit S-8D58 batteries. Although the capacity is about the same as the stock Panasonics, they have an external coaxial power tap socket that would be useful to me to run an external monitor without the weight of a second battery pack, and there's a 5V USB output on it as well. I haven't tried one yet, however.
