Putting the HVX on Jennie Craig

For a long time I waited until an HD camera came along that had the capability of the HVX in a package compact and light enough for a large helicam. At a bit over 6 lbs. it works quite well but at that weight I still have to add about a lb. of ballast weight to the tail of the helicopter to get good balance. The performance of the helicopter, especially at high altitudes on hot days would improve dramatically if I could reduce the weight even more. Looking at the camera tonight I realized that the handle adds no value to how I use the camera and is usually in the way. My question is, can the handle be easily removed without causing any operational problems to the rest of the unit. I had hoped the mic, IR sensor, record button and zoom toggle could simply be unplugged and the handle removed. Anybody know for sure? Are there any other areas to reduce weight or size?

Haven't taken apart my HVX200 yet, but by looking at the shell of the camera it might be possible that the swithes, mic, and eyeviewfinder may have plugs that may not be removable(soldered) . Could be difficult for the evf if it is.

Any ways, thought of doing the same with the handle as well as removing other stuff to make it more compact. I wanted to relocate the lcd or make it sort of remote style. I am making my own underwater housing for it and it is kinda bulky wth the handle.

I am not going to operate on my camera any time soon , but I am curious to know on your findings.

In the future I will do all sort of hacks to my HVX200, when I feel I can afford to. Or when I put alot more hours on it.
