Pushing the DRS limit and over

Hi.

First I hate to over expose any part of the frame at all, ever and it was a clear blue sky with this interview.

I'm making a commercial for a school and I'm testing to stretch the dynamic range to a place where camera naturally can't go.

This is my result and reference:

http://www.igelkottfilm.se/video/DRS_test.mp4 117mb

shot:
detail +1
Master ped -1
5,6k
DRS +1

Edit:
layer one: Neat Video smooth and sharpen default
Layer two: Levels, black: 12 middle: 2 white: 255

Can i make it look better?

I would choose a less contrasty location to shoot at. Direct sunlight can be hard if you want faces without harsh shadows. Stay in the shadow or use a semi-transparent screen to diffuse sunlight.

The interview after that is in the shade, that made a weired keyed in look :)
I could need a semi transparent screen. But i'm thinking, if I recorded this in avc-intra, would it look much better under this proses?

I would stay away from DRS and use a scene file I know well. Currently I'm working on a couple of looks in Magic Bullet that, so far, makes some great images from the AF. I pushed it probably further than anyone would consider and managed it to look sweet.

Show me some before and after pictures please

Jag har inga problem med det, jag skriver ofta i discussioner på främmande språk.

You could shoot that setup with a 35mm film camera and all that would happen the unflattering specular highlights on her nose would be rendered with even more fidelity and clarity. Not to mention her uncomfortable squinting.

For a place like this position your subject with the back against the sun and have a reflector to light up the face. Here's a cheap but good one with several reflective materials to use from a swedish reseller.

The core of it is actually of a translucent material so it might work as a screen for close-ups.

Börjar bli en Svensktråd det här... Martti kör du med GH1 nu eller?

I agree higher bitrate and more bits is much less importan than setting up your lights or control how the sun hits the subject.

I have two of those with corresponding tripods :) http://www.cyberphoto.se/info.php?article=CRK32

If i have her back against the sun, the background will render ugly with matt colors.

I knew exactly what i went in to when i setup thats interview, trying to things at a level that my fellow shooters at Videobrigade does not do.

A polarizer may help with the sky exposure...also if someone is squinting it can help if the person closes their eyes and looks at the sun for a bit to acclimate.

so 8 bit avc-intra can't contribute when wanting to in post correct under exposed footage?

Nice to have a question to something no one seems to have tested. I have to test it then :)

btw, Neat Video makes stupid drs:ing work ^^

8 bit is 8 bit, therein lies the rub. But what you got ain't totally unfixable, it needs some TLC in CC, see attached example. Dealing with her squinting is a CGI job though, it's probably less expensive to reshoot. You've got an unhealthy amount of magenta though in the footage, should look into that camera setting.

Actually in my opinion you are overusing the Neat Video noise reduction, her skin looks really plasticky.

Yup, I'm still the proud owner of the first GH1 sold in Sweden. Haven't had a gig big enough to warrant purchasing the AF101 yet but that day'll come soon.

The cheapest of all is not using that part of the clip ;)

Finished film (720p 4Mbit/s) http://www.igelkottfilm.se/videobrigade/Linnesgymnasiet.mp4
Did you change the color of both of those clips? Left very purple and right is awfully yellow.

I used default in the test so thats the neat videos smooth and sharpen.

Sorry I have forgot what "needs some TLC" in CC means

I tested reducing black in the levels from 12 to 8 and it looks much better.

Have you noticed how afraid people are to get in to a thread witch has elements of foreign language in it?

No, but I don't usually have conversations with hedgehogs!

I watched your finished film (and the original clip), and I think it would have been better to have the sun behind the girl. Her hair was dark so that it would not blow out (would actually give her a nice hair light), and her face would have been better balanced with the background (especially with a reflector).
If the building in the sunlight behind her was too bright, have a building in the shade (or darker tress) behind her.

I see you think otherwise, but that's how I would have shot it (or all in the shade).

It's just very harsh sunlight (on pale skin) with deep shadows all around, a battle few cameras can win without some sort of assistance.

The interiors are very nice with all the natural light, shame I don't speak Swedish!
Cheers!

Yeah, it was wery nice interiors.

I thinks its not battle won, I'm going to shoot in the shade with reflectors her on forth. :)
