Purple looks blue

This came up in another post. When shooting someone wearing a purple shirt it looks blue on the LCD monitor and any other monitors. However when you bring the footage in to edit it is indeed purple. Good to know, but hard to explain to a client when they are looking at the monitor on the day of the shoot.

What causes this? Can it be fixed/avoided. This seems to happen no matter what the lighting situation or white balance. Some have said the same happens with the EX1 monitor.

This is common. Same on the DVX, HVX, HPX300 and most other Panasonic cameras I've operated. At least on the on-board LCD.

This happens with almost all digital cameras video or still. Purple is the hardest color to faithfully reproduce and even print. Here is a website that offers a general explanation as to why purples are always so difficult to work with, but the short of it is that what you are seeing as purple usually falls outside of the range that Monitors/digital cameras can capture. You will also see this with certain reds in most cameras.

It is more of a monitor issue than camera issue. I have also filmed quite a few purple shirts/jackets that looked much more blue on my SmallHD and the on-board LCD. When viewed on my Flanders or even a Sony CRT, they looked purpley accurate.

Absolutely...and one can often see it displayed when comparing color bars. The Blue in the pluges is the one to observe.

Solution is ...avoid the color. Who wears purple anyway. ( hippie color?)

Gold is also a very difficult color to deal with BTW. ( greenish gold, yellowish gold, redish gold..but never goldish gold)
