Purchasing Lights

I currently attened a film school; we're shooting everyday in class, and in many cases outside of class.
Is that where they teach you that Moles are ugly, so you shouldn't get them?:)

I don't mean to be a dick, but film school means as much as any college degree... zero. Trust me. I have a very expensive piece of tolet paper hanging on the wall of my office right now. It just sits there taunting me.

The lights are just a personal preference, It's not all Mole lights, it's the ones that have that Faded Red, brown-ish color.

Yeah, I know it means crap to get a degree from a film college.... But it lets me shoot just about everyday with equipment I don't currently own.

Owning the amount of lights you listed is a huge commitment and can amount to a big money drain. How do you maintain them? Where do you store them? If you rent them out, who handles checking them out and the returns? Who takes care of the money? What happens when a light you rented goes down? Are you willing to drive a replacement out to a set at midnight? The questions and headaches go on and on. I owned a grip truck and about 25 lights for several years and it's a burden.

My advice is pickup an Arri light kit or two. Add some Kino Flos, a couple of 1200 Watt HMI PARs, a dedo kit and gripology (20 c-stands, flags, sandbags, apple boxes, etc....) If you need a big gun, over 2K, then rent.

I thought I had read wrongly when i saw you including 24k lights. Like the rest of the people here said, you should instead get more lower wattage lights, and rent the big guns - how many times are yuo gonna use them anyway?

Great info here peepps. Very true on the big lights... Not to mention the cost of the bulbs and all that. YIKES.

I'd also second the Kinos and HMI's and a variety of grip gear and light modification things. You'll also need a good grip truck with a lift gate... or something to run around with
