Purchasing AF100 Monday- Need Opinions on Budget (Around $8k)

Consider an external recorder for critical broadcast work. AVCHD 8 bit is fine but a 10 bit recorder will give the editor an advantage for compositing plus the inherent audio noise floor on the AF-100 is lousy. The Sound Devices Pix 240 will upgrade you in several ways if you can afford it.

I'd take almost any brand of SDHC card over the Kingstons based on numerous reviews I've read over the past year.

I've got that Tokina and I've been very impressed with the bang-for-buck it provides, so good choice there. Looks like you'll have a gap between 16mm and 28mm though (not counting the 14-140 which isn't great indoors), and if you're not going for the Voigt right away (a wise decision IMO since you need lights), you may want to look into an older 24mm (Nikon, Canon, Minolta) still prime to fill the hole til you get something better. You should only have to spend around $130-$170 and you'll have another nice piece of glass in your arsenal. Get a cheaper adapter off of Amazon or eBay that's one solid piece of metal, put the lens on it, never take it off, and voila! You've got a nice m4/3 compatible prime. My only word of warning with this method is to thoroughly inspect the adapter before using it, as some of the cheaper ones can be slightly off, but most are just fine.

That said, I echo everyone's sentiment about the Kingston cards. Go with something else.

Happy shooting!

Thanks for the advice Jon! I'm lost when it comes to determining which older primes are decent and which aren't. For instance, i have seen some footage from an older FD that looked, not bad..but had a specific feel, almost dreamy. I want to make sure it's just a clean image, but I definitely need to research and add a prime for the 25mm area.

Take my guarantee and word for it if it helps...every lens as shown in my signature is excellent.

Of course you must ensure that you get them in excellent condition, mechanically and optically ( eg clean and clear of fungus, dust, scratches etc)

I already purchased the camera moments ago along with 3 Panasonic Class-10 Gold cards, two extra batters and a case. Tomorrow I'm picking up the Tokina 28-70. Now to find a 25mm prime, and the right adapter for the 28-70.

Any recommendations quickly so I can purchase it and have it be here in time for the camera :)

Thanks again everyone, I'm so excited to finally get it!!

Thanks Shooter! What adapter are you using for your Nikon primes?

Modified Adaptimax.

I have matted and flocked internally.

I suggest you get another quality adapter if you are not prepared to modify one.

BTW: take your time collecting a lens kit. Get " keepers" that will do you for a long long time.

Dont rush it by grabbing lenses just based on focal length or "holes" in your range'

Choose carefully and based on what you need ( ie what you need to shoot)

Thanks Shooter. I'm looking for the 24mm 2.8 you have in your sig. I believe that the Tokina 28-70 is a solid choice for me. My next lens purchase will most likely be the 11-16, then the Voig 25mm. That's the plan, at least!

As for the better adapter...for now, I'm going with a cheaper adapter until I need a better one for the 11-16.

You think that would be more appropriate in my kit if I'm working with the 14-140 and the Tokina 28-70? Like I said, the majority of my use would be for narrative work: essentially short comedy skits and a web-series I've been working on, all primarily indoors.

Again, I appreciate the help

The 14-140 is a slow lens at 4.0-5.8. You will need good lighting. A good idea is to have a few fast primes that overlap just in case you need the speed or shallow depth for dialogue close ups.

I have a couple of Lumix pancake lenses. The 20mm F1.7 $345, and 14mm F2.5. $300. Both are fast and sharp and don't rewire an adapter. Iris is controlled with the camera.

I've wanted the 20 F1.7, but I'm worried it's so small that focusing during shots (in this case dramatic narrative) will be very difficult. Any thoughts there?

Good point. It’s very small, and FF/Gears probably wouldn't work very well.

I use it a lot on my GH2.

The 20mm 1.7 is so small and so close to the camera that my follow focus doesn't work very well on the lens at all... So I've abandoned considering that. As far as buying this whole kit, If you can buy it used I'd say go for that. You'll save enough money to probably have an extra 1500 bucks to get those other things you need.

I also love the 14-140 for exteriors.. Simply a great outdoors lens. I think the Voigtlander is essential. I too would look into the Canon FD lenses cause they are hard to beat for the price and I like the look...

What's the point of a 10-bit recorder when the signal coming out of the camera is 8-bit?
