Hey guys, first off I am a new member and want to say hello to everyone, lots of talented people on this fourm. My question is very simple, which would be the best investment. I am a director and DP and lense is very important to me. I like soft focus and very elegant loks I can pull from the lense which is why I liked the XL2. But I loved the Panasonic so what should I do guys, which lens is the best for me?

Thanks a lot hope to hear from ya soon!

Welcome, GoldenCam! You are entering the best community on the internet!

As to a comparison, most of us will only be answering from guesses, since we don't yet have the HVX. There has been alot of discussion about lens issues--you may get the best information from a quick search, since the folks who know first hand and are qualified to answer have already given what there is to know so far.

Do a search on anything Barry Green has done! (Go to a thread where you see one of his posts, click on his name, and it will allow you to see all of the posts he has done. Then loosen you belt and start dining!)

Edit: here's a good place to start, too: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=43409

Canon didn't impress me in person nearly as much as the Panasonic, but that's because of what I'm going to be shooting. Extreme sports, music videos, and a comedy show. I want slow motion and cinema style shooting. I also am a canon owner, but I like the direction that panny is going. Also, I see Panny people on here.. and other sites. You never see a canon rep and I think they lost their focus after producting the XL one and then taking so long in between for the XL2 and this HD. I also think that the atachments make the Panny lens look a lot more appealing.. The stock lens is also sweet. Canon Viewfinder and lack of LCD was also telling.

Thanks everyone for the info, appreciate it. Yea, the type of filming I do is action shorts mostly. Actually im gonna be filming a action short in March/April and deff. will let the DVX community have a first peek at it.

Correct me if im wrong, didnt the HVX200 come with an interchangble lense?
Thanks.

Welcome to the community!

The HVX200 does not have interchangeable lenses ... that is an ability that the Canon XL-H1 has. You have stated that the lens is a very important thing to you, so the Canon would seem a better choice for you as it will give you more flexiblity in that regard as the HVX has a fixed lens.

Welcome to the community.

Research. Research. Research.

That's about all I can say. Best wait until both cameras are available to the masses before you base your decision on what's been going on here so far. I can't even RENT an HVX to test at the moment, so I wouldn't be so quick to jump on either boat.

With that said -- happy hunting.

Yea, looks like I got some studyin to do. I saw some test footage of the 35mm adapter on the Panasonic DVX-100, and I was shocked. The image was outstanding and beautiful.

I have been told that Panasonic DVX has a better film look then the Canon, even though the XL2 has a native 16:9. What do you DVX users think? Thanks.

The DVX is much more filmic than the XL2 out of the box. You need to tweak the XL2 in post to achieve the color and gamma feel the DVX just spits out with ease. However it can be done. The beauty is that once you get the look in post you have the resolution plus the film-look.

Having said that I sold my XL2 and have and HVX200 on the way (yeah right......someday it will get here....). Experience has shown me that I spent too much time in post to get the "look" that the DVX just had straight. So I opted for the HVX200 which is a 16x9 DVX on steroids. Oh....and did someone say it does Hi Def too?

For action sports.. just like I shoot... Slow-MO is kick booty. That's something you couldn't offer before.

Yea I saw that when I filmed with the XL2, I thought I didnt configure the camera before I shot or something. I shot with a Panasonic DVX, and I really liked the "look" the only thing bugging me was the non-native 16:9. The HVX is native correct? Thanks.

Absotively posilutely. Yes.

Very intresting info Benton, im glad you posted that.

You know I think a DVX100+35mm adapter will do just fine. A question for you guys. What are the MAJOR benifts of shooting on HD besides the quality.

Is it more marketable for indie. films? I mean if shot right on DVX100 with 35mm I dont think there would be a drastic quality difference then HD.

But then again that native 16:9 is key. That was probably the only major factor that was killing the DVX next to XL2.

I would imagine they would make a bullet proof adapter for the HVX.

My prediction is a relay lens is going to add significant cost to an XL+35mm solution.

interesting HZ
Was it you who posted someon using a Prime lense on a Canon as a relay?
Wonder what other options there are.

What do you mean by significant cost (& why)
Thanks HZ,
I always appreciate your feedback

during the time H1 owners waited for the relay configuration.

The key benefits of the relay lens are more accurate calibration without fussing with the Canon IS lens focusing, and achieving a shorter overall length of the camera rig. Some may say cleaner brighter image but I doubt it.

But, you're making it sound like H1 owners will have to wait for a relay lens in order to use the G35 or other 35mm imager, which is not true. Some *may* want to wait for a relay lens, but I wouldn't.

Im now gearing towards a Panasonic DVX100+35mm adapter. I just checked out Holyzoo's website, very informative HZ. Im gonna look at those test shots and im preety sure I can make my descion of your site. Thanks!

It's a very nice affordable combo there, for sure. For me, I'm compelled to go HD - either HVX or XL-H1. Every hour is back and forth. :) A few things I want to get beyond the DVX100 is the bad color rendition of reds from DV25, squeezed anamorphic widescreen display, and lower resolution.

But the fact remains that the DVX100 is still an awesome camera that is worthy to make a whole lot of killer SD work.
