Pulling Stills (Frames) off the timeline

I am shooting with my DVX100a and editing in Premiere 6.0
When I export timeline as frame to get a still, I get an image that is very low in resolution - in fact it really has to be tiny to appear without imperfections. Am I doing something wrong - or is this normal???
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, that is normal. Your frames are only about 720 X 480 pixels; just under 346 KILO pixels. A decent res for a photo is 6 MEGA pixels, over 17 times the 346K.

Thanks for your help Larry. Perhaps I can ask you to clarify:

Is that resolution (1280 by 720 as I'm shooting 16:9) the full resolution that the actual camera captures at? If that is as you say less than 1mega pixel, I don't get it - my old cell phone that I got for free can take a picture that's 3mega pixels! How come my £3,000 DVX camera is nowhere near that???

Confused!>.......

Thanks :)

you can always try editing the still in photoshop afterwards. Maybe uprezzing it a little bit, noise reduction etc. I have had good results doing that for some bmx "photos".

the reason the video camera cant produce the quality of still that the still camera can is just that, it is a video camera. If your camera could produce 3 meg images it would be HD. Shooting widescreen doesnt effect the number of pixels on the dvx as they have native 4x3 chips, or whatever it is PAL is. The resolution of the image will be standard PAL resolution. If you want higher resolution images take a photo or you can invest in a 4k HD cinema camera, but even that doesnt come anywhere near the 8 plus megapixels most consumer digital cameras can put out these days.

..yeah. if you wanted to export as square pixels for your squeezed 16:9 footage, you could use a res of 864 x 480 but for video purp0oses you should be sticking with the 720 x 480 at 1.2 PAR
