Pulldown Removal & .MTS Conversion??

Hi guys. Can you please recommend the following to me

1. a free program that can remove 60i pulldown accurately and

2. how do I convert acvhd .mts files?

#1 is not so important because I am going to be applying the hack very soon so hopefully there will be no pulldown at that point but it will be nice to know anyway if something exists just in case I get read errors and need to shoot something in non 24pN mode. I just can't justify purchasing Neoscene or Edius or whatever else for hundreds $ if I only "MIGHT" need it if you know what I mean. Is there anything out there that can do it decently for free that I can download?

#2 how are people editing their .mts files, to my knowledge none of the major suites like FCP, Premiere, Vegas etc take .mts files or do they? How can I convert .mts to something editable and what is the best format to convert it to to retain the highest possible quality? I don't know much about formats and codecs so what should I look to convert it to .mov, or .avi or .........?

Thanks!

Every major NLE accepts .mts files directly, except of course for the Apple NLEs, which will only accept Quicktime .MOV files.

Whether you *want* to edit MTS files directly or not, that's up to you. EDIUS 5.5, EDIUS Neo, and Premiere Pro CS5 are optimized to be able to handle those files easily in realtime. Vegas can import them, but on my dual-core laptop I can only get realtime playback if I set it to preview quality in a little quarter-sized window.

CS5 handles acvhd well? As well as edius? does it auto do pulldown in case there turns out to be something wrong with the 24p hack? So far I have been fine but the other b camera wont have anything to do with 24p n. The one made in china.

Your GH1 made in China won't even shoot 24p native with the "B" settings? What SDHC card are you using? My GH-1 is made in China and I can at least shoot native 24p with the "B" settings with no problems so far. With native 24p and "C" settings, my camera freezes when I shoot static high detailed shots like a green leafy tree with the leaves blowing around. I ordered a Sandisk Extreme 16GB Class 10 (30 MB/s) card and I am going to see if I can shoot native 24p with the "C" settings with that card.

Yes.. I'm actually very happy using CS5 now even without the cuda enabled hardware ( I will upgrade tho for faster rendering h.264). It's just as spunky as Edius 5.5 for me, maybe not quite as fast to eit with but some things like rate stretch tool and better audio editing make me not miss the slightly faster editing speed in Edius. Oh, it also does the pulldown correctly from the GH1.. Handles my GH13 "b" settings with no native 24p just fine.

It does do the pulldown correctly from old non hack gh1 60i files?

What setting do you chose when you start up to do this? avchd 1080 24p and just drop the 1080 60i gh1 files in.. or do you choose 1080 60i and then do something?

I have a wedding that I have to get out that was shot in pre hack 1080 60i gh1 settings... not a pro gig just did it for a friend but I have been delaying getting it out to him because I dread having to do all the pulldown removal ect...

It's not doing it for me.. In CS5 I tried 1080 24p, 1080 60i.. either setting, the 60i GH1 clips have interlacing. At first they look fine, paused they look fine.. But throw a filter on them and tada.. interlacing. Export the clips and it's visible. CS5 is not doing the pulldown. It's showing a progressive frame based on sequence settings. Fast motion and you'll see the interlacing.
Back to using Xpress 4.0 to do the pulldown. Thank goodness I can go back out to mpeg-4 VBR so not only do I save space, but it looks great with native 23.97!

Ok that's what I thought. I couldn't get it to work either. It does work with the native files but I have some old 60i wrapped stuff and I was hopi9ng to not have to dump 2 hours through neoscene and eat up a whole hard drive to do this.....

I tried using tmpenc to remove it, but it has some issues to and doesn't remove the pulldown correctly and ads some weird artifacts...

Really? What issues? I haven't seen any artifacts, but don't wanna rule them out. What should I look for?
What format did you export to in Xpress 4.0?

When I used tmpenc to remove gh1 1080 60i pulldown and set it to 24p motion priority, inverse pulldown method, or almost any other method.... I get some strange color artifacts that pop up here and there, like when someone moves their hands very fast, one of the frames has some color artifacts, like a slight double image of the hand in motion that is all blue or all red... weird... but a notable problem I have not been able to correct or use tmpenc for pro work.

I shoot everything 24p N checked now. If I HAVE to do pulldown removal I use neoscene.. but neoscene DOES slightly degrade the image a tad, even at highest quality settings. It's negligible but it's there. My encodes to mp4 from editing in vegas 9d are NOTICEABLY better than my encodes from premiere when using neoscene, or using neoscene in vegas.

Odd.. I'll look at my files. I just converted 80 files yesterday but haven't checked them all. I'll let you know if I find anything. I'm using slightly higher than B settings in ptool but leaving 24pN unchecked for stability. If there is a problem with Xpress, I'll need to get a SanDisk card and go back to 24pN.

Thanks.
