Pulldown Removal-I read the sticky..it doesn't cover this

I read the sticky but I still feel I am missing something. You can goto System Settings>playback control to change the pulldown pattern, but also under the log and capture>capture settings you can capture in 2:3:3:2. I am just confused on which to use when. I get that for 24p you use 2:3 and for 24pA you use 2:3:3:2. When you change them in the playback control does it go into effect when you drop things in the timeline? And what happens to 60i and 30p footage?

Hmm, I feel due to the lack of responses that I asked my question wrong. Anyone have any idea what I mean?

The pull-down setting on playback control only affects the video output from FCP to FireWire (or other device). That's for watching 24p footage on an NTSC (29.97) production monitor while you edit.

When you capture DVX footage with the pull-down removal, it actually removes the pull-down during capture and leaves you with a 23.976 video after capture. As for 30p or 60i, if you try to capture with the advanced pull-down removal setting, I cannot imagine that FCP would appreciate if very much and believe the end result would be less than ideal. I've never tried it, but there's no reason to. Always match your capture settings to your source footage.

Exactly- that has zero effect on anything except playout to tape. Leave at the default settings.

Okay so if I was exporting 24p footage to a dvd there is no reason to mess with the pull down removal because I am not going back to tape?

And as for capturing, when would you it to remove the pull-Down?

You want to remove pulldown at capture and edit as 23.976. Then, you'd export as 23.976 for DVD.

If you don't remove pulldown, you won't be able to edit or export as 23.976.

And as for capturing, when would you it to remove the pull-Down?

That's when you would do it in FCP -- at capture.

Set your capture settings to whatever you are capturing (in my case its mostly DV NTSC Advanced Pulldown Removal, which will create 23.976 clips from the dv tape) then when you drag the first clip in the timeline, tell FCP to use that as the sequence settings.

Yeah don't confuse yourself or overthink it- what's in the FAQ is all you need to worry about...

Thanks for all the responses. I do have a tendency to over complicate things but I just want to be sure I know what I am doing.
