Pulldown: Before or After?

I tried searching for this and reading Barry's book before I posted so I apologize if I'm being redundant but...

I shot a movie at 24p advanced...we brought it into a 23.97 timeline in FCP 4.5 to edit.
All settings reflect the 2:3:3:2 pulldown...

When the movie is finished editing what is our best step to reflect the quality and "framerate" of this shooting style? Or were we supposed to apply a pulldown BEFORE putting footage in timeline?

xxx very confused

you are supposed to remove the advanced pulldown during capture of footage at 29.97, and then import and edit in a 23.98 timeline, and say you are printing it to DVD, export the timeline into a MPEG-2 codec at 24fps.

thanks!

how do I remove pulldown during capture? Is this done automatically by choosing the right settings before import? (In User Settings and Setup)

Pulldown was added in the camera to any 24 fps footage to make it 29.97 (at least tempoarily).
24 + pulldown = 29.97 (regular video, required to go to MiniDV tape or to normal video)
29.97 (from 24 fps) - pulldown = 24 fps (23.98 actually)
You've already removed pulldown (23.98) and are editing on 23.98 timeline.
Options available now:
1. Print to video (output to firewire video. FCP adds pulldown to make it 29.97
2. Make DVD with DVD Studio Pro (24fps DVD)
3. Output to film (go to film house and have it filmed out)
4. Make Quicktime movie (23.98)
5. Add pulldown in After Effects or other package to convert back to 29.97. This woudl be if you needed to make a 29.97 DVD or have a post hosue drop to digibeta or some other video format.

scottdvx, I thought when you import advanced 24 video, you need to import as 29.97 with the advanced pulldown removal. and if that is true, and jon never clicked the little box for advanced pulldown removal, then wouldnt his footage be incorrectly imported into his 23.98 timeline?

Yes, 24pa needs to have pulldown removal on capture or tool -> remove pulldown BEFORE placing in a 23.98 timeline.
So if I didn't do this...and I just set all the user Preferences to 2:3:3:2 then all the stuff we've edited so far is useless? (in reference to ScottDVX) What "little box" needs to be clicked? (in reference to Dyr989)

I apologize if this is not hitting my brain in the right fashion but a rough cut is near complete and I'm freaking out that we may have f**ked the whole process.

If it wasn't for DVXUSER I probably would have shot myself a long time ago

The check box is for the easy A/V setup. By default it doesn't show all the different presets. By turning on the Check box (show all) then it will list the remove 2:3:3:2 option
if the capture is set to remove 2:3:3:2 then you're fine.
If it's the playback preference then it shoudl be set to 2:3:2:3 and not 2:3:3:2

How about Premiere Pro 1.5 , is there anything I have to do besides just editing it in a 24pa timeline?
