Pull me towards a FS700 away from a C100 Purchase

I am about to take the plunge into the Canon C100 because of the image. The image coming from a 5D Mark II and a 5D Mark III is beautiful but what I have been seeing on the C100 is Gorgeous. I know that I will miss Slomo and FS700 is king of the Slomos right now but I need more than just the slomo to jump the gun on a FS700.

Thank you in advance.

Then just check out what the Odyssey 7Q and RAW makes with the FS700R...
Totally different league - also pricewise.

Compare C500 and FS700 + 7Q, still the Sony does deliver the better picture with lower cost.
Still, the FS700 is what it is - a strange form factor. Love it or leave it.

But how can one answer your request without knowing anything about your clients or your needs?
There is no "this camera is better than this one". It's almost always a matter of what you will do
with it...

The slow mo. And what you can turn the FS700 into by using the Odyssey 7Q. With it you can shoot 2K raw and soon 10bit 422. That will take the FS700 beyond the C100 image wise, I believe.

and maybe even 12-bit 444 later on, so yeah it feels like the fs700 has a bright future.. Remember thats with the upgraded fs700 and a odyssey 7q with ssd's and an extra 700 something $ for the codec/function. So yeah its an investment (which I think is worth it) just so you have the fact.

The 2 things C100 has on the FS700 + 7Q (you cannot talk about one without the other right now)

1) Price - It's 50% cheaper
2) It's smaller

FS700 + 7Q is in a completely different league than the C300. Take a look at this video. You cannot shoot something like this on a C300. The dynamic range is at least 1 stop greater with S-Log, slow motion, and the detail, color and gradeability that comes with RAW, 10-bit codecs and true Log profiles is quite a bit beyond the C300. I've been pixel peeping and the jump in IQ from 8-bit to 10-bit codecs transcoded from RAW is huge.

Plus all the other goodies that are coming with the 7Q is going to be great.

My rig with the 7Q has very nice ergonomics for handheld. Light and quick.

Good luck with your choice. Choosing cameras is a headache.

I don't have hands on experience with the FS700, but I'm heavily researching a new purchase and from what I can tell, the C100 edges out the FS100 but does not at all compare to the FS700. I just watched Gene's other video on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/76465843) and the DR is incomparable. You can't shoot direct sun and shadows like that with anything else at this price.

FS700 + 7Q is a bit pricey at $12K or so, but it's worth it IMO. Price wise, nothing under the F5 can do what the FS700 + 7Q can do. Cry now, smile later :) Even the C500 has less Dynamic range than the FS700.

It's a major headache.
After seeing the price on the 7Q. I think now I might not have no choice than to get a C100. Thanks everyone for your input. Hopefully I can raise enough money in 2 days. Haha

Something I'm surprised few seem to ever mention about the FS700 is how versatile it is as an "event" style camera when you need it. The combination of the Sony LAE2 adapter with Alpha lenses is just stunning in how well it works for say...sports or maybe an uncontrolled situation. The auto focus is unbelievably good even with tight DOF. I've used the Sony Alpha 70-200 2.8 in football games and it's just spectacular how well it works shooting "video" style with a stills lens. You can actually use it and trust it in most situations. (with a little practice)

I've used the Sony raw recorder and it is pretty darn cool too. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but you can basically shoot whatever you want to AVCHD internally while also shooting an appropriate 4K/2K or HD version to the raw recorder simultaneously. Just a solid SDI connection and it just detects what you're shooting and goes. Not too much to think about...it just works.

And it seems to be taken for granted, but I am impressed with how good the audio section of the FS700 is. So many times I have put the mic inputs to "auto" and never had a problem. When you don't have the luxury of a dedicated sound guy with mixer, it's nice to know if you're at least using a good mic with decent mic'ing techniques, the camera isn't gonna trip you up there.

Still totally in love with the wide range of possibilities the FS700 offers.

For the price, it's the most versatile camera made IMO. With a 7Q, it's also a legit, lower end cinema camera. I love the FS700.

Totally agree. Incredibly versatile.

Incidentally, I've had shockingly good results exporting Sony raw MXF files to ProRes 4K...right within Premiere Pro CC. Easy grading with Colorista within Premiere. No need to go the Resolve route if your needs aren't as extensive.

Speedbooster, lens options, 60/120/240fps slow motion, more DR, 4K, more upgrade options with 7Q.

That said, C100 is a nice camera and CLog is more useful at this point than slog2, and the C100 generally has nicer colors out of the box. Fs700 has some edge contrast and primary color highlight issues if you don't use slog2, C100 has a little more aliasing and throws away DR if you dont use CLog. If you buy C100, buy it used for a good price and if you should want to upgrade in the future sell it and buy something else.

I have the C100 and love the image and the ergonomics. But.. If I'd had the budget I would have bought the Fs700. The image differences isn't significantly different enough to base your decision on IMHO. The Slo-mo and upgrade options for the Fs700 are much more attractive. The C100 pretty much has no upgrade paths unless Canon decide to give it slo-mo or a better codec which I doubt they ever will. I don't care for autofocus.

Go go with the fs700 if you can afford it. Then get the 7q down the road.

if you shoot weddings and events go with the C100. For corporate promos get the Sony.
