Pull Down

Okay so I have been reading this forum for awhile now, and I wanted to make sure I have things straight.

I use the HVX with a Firestore FS-100. I either produce short educational pieces for the web or burned to DVD with DVDSP.

Do I have to worry about pull down in FCP with this workflow if I am never going to be broadcasting the footage?

I mostly shoot 720P and the occasional 480i.

Thanks

Some form of pulldown is introduced when you shoot film at 24fps and digitize it to Digibeta, for example, or when you shoot 24Padvance to a DV tape. There is a discrepancy between your framerate (24Pa) and the medium you're shooting to (DV at 29.97), so there has to be pulldown to get it to fit properly and still run at the correct speed.

Shooting 720P won't be an issue. Edit on the proper timeline (probably 24PN, but it depends on what you shoot), and then you're done. You can resize for web or encode for DVD. The conversion will be handled by DVD Studio.

Shooting 480i, you can do the same thing. Just edit on a timeline to match your footage and it should work out fine because the camera handled any conversion needed (what this was depends on your settings). So if you shot 24Padvance, put it on a 24Padvance timeline because FCP knows what your camera did and it will take your 29.97 footage and play it back for you at the right framerate. If you're going to do heavy compositing you might want to remove pulldown and add it back in (so you just have the fields you need, not the doubled fields), but generally you can let your camera and FCP handle things for you and be okay. If your footage plays back properly, you're probably doing okay.
