PTools patch settings database online!

With everyone working together trying to arrive at the optimal group of patch settings I though I may try to contribute in some small way by creating a simple database of PTools patch settings using Google docs / forms.

When you have a set of patch settings worth sharing with the rest of the members simply go to:

http://bit.ly/PToolsForm

and quickly fill in the form listing your settings. You get to name them for easy reference in the forum threads.

To locate a specific named patch set or a user's settings simply go to the list at:

http://bit.ly/PToolsList

If everyone will start contributing their settings to this simple database I believe those that are tracking testing (tester13 and others) will be able to compare and contrast settings and results much easier. Regular GH1 enthusiasts like me will also have an up-to-date, complete, and easy reference for setting up PTool.

If anyone has any suggestions for changes to the form or anything else please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks

Seems like a good idea.

We need precise details of the card used too.

Also perhaps more specific question about results - is it possible to frame that in terms of time run, fault encountered (eg freeze), that kind of thing?

I'm hoping the free form notes section of the form might be good enough to gather test data pertinent to the group of settings. I hope to reserve adding specific fields unless they apply to almost all the entries (like new patch settings, etc..). Your thoughts?

Thanks
Chris

My personal instinct is that card info must be mandatory, not just left to the user to remember to include in the free form bit. Maybe just change the prompt for the free form bit to include reference to card used and results?

eg change "Describe what makes your version different or interesting" to "Describe results and card used" (or something).

Makes sense to me. I added a Test Data / SD card section. Should be up. Thanks for the feedback. Now to get folks to key the stuff in.

Give it time. Ad hoc posting in threads has been the norm so far and it may be a habit hard to break (and I don't know whether 'Tester13' finds that easier, or not - he'll doubtless express a preference before long). A question - forum posting allows the evolution of settings to be seen as time goes by, and posted settings can be updated with better ones subsequently discovered - does the form method replicate that?

I think both methods can be used. The forum method lends itself to tweaking a subset of settings, etc.. experimentation. I had envisioned the form / list to more or less document the successes for easy retrieval in complete form by others who aren't necessarily involved in the testing. Alot of folks just want to easily grab the complete list of settings that are being touted as the best for X.

Example.. great results w/ class 6 card MJPEG 60mbps - Pull "JPEGKING" from the list at http//bit.ly/PToolsList.

I would find it helpful to see, it the settings were used on a PAL or NTSC Model. because we in PAL country do not have the problem of the pulldown and we are more concerned with the 25p than the 24p. At lease some of us.

It might be more helpful if a field was added to that form having us quantify our success with a particular set of settings. A question like "Are you having any problems with these settings? Y/N" and "What are the nature of your problems" with check boxes for things like "Card Error" "Video anomaly" "Camera lock-up" as well as a way to choose which video mode is being shot in, MJPEG/HD/FHD. I think the free-form box is still important, but these questions might be a quicker way of finding patterns.

Chris,

Early this morning Ptools 3.36 was updated without version change to accommodate 422 color space, so you might want to add a "3.36 v3 (6/13/2010)" option when you can, so people don't get confused.

Aren't PAL and NTSC models purely determined by the firmware?

Thanks

I'm looking into a way to implement your proposal right now. I'm trying to only have them answer the problem questions IF they choose they are having the issue. Otherwise I don't want to make the base form any longer than it already is. Thanks for the feedback!

Could we remap the layout so the parameters are all listed vertically and the individual users are horizontal? Seems more manageable to scroll vertically than horizontally when you have so many parameters to get through.

I agree 100%. Unfortunately Google doesn't give me an option to populate the spreadsheet in this way. As a work around I believe you are able to download it in excel format and manipulate the data in any way you see fit.

Thanks

That's true. I don't think Google Forms is quite that sophisticated (But it's getting better every day, so there might be new developments I last used it! I've certainly been wrong before). You could just make the question not required and phrase it like this:

Are you having problems with the footage? (Leave blank if no)
[]Anomaly
[]Card Error
[]Camera Lockup
