Psychological Horror - Thriller trailer

This is a piece that I worked on a while back. The script made the top 100 in the Project Greenlight Screenplay Competition in 2004. Since then, the writer/director Don Houston has been rewriting the script, solidifying a business plan, and preparing the trailer for an all out assault on possible sources of funding. Even if he doesn't get the funding that he hopes for, this film will get made.

I was the DP on the trailer project and hope to do the same for the real deal. I did the lighting as well. This was my first attempt at shooting with the DVX100. I was blown away! I loved the way that the camera was able to handle the highlights, and I fell in love with the color rendition as well.

Anyway, I'd love to hear some honest feedback from the DVXuser community.

Liked it! The visuals of the text was very well done. Music matched the mood very well. The composite of the woman getting up from her body and the eye quick zoom worked also.

I'm not so sure about the constant growling sound effect. I wanted to know more about what I was supposed to be afraid of. The images are disturbing and flow well but I don't think there's enough of the story revealed and maybe that was the original intention.
Overall a good and scaaary trailer! Keep up the good work.

Hey! I'm in Denver too!

i loved the final part of the trailor with the young girl walking forwards thought that was awesome, the start of it seemed a little rushed and was struggling to comprehend all the images or in what context they were meant. but it finished well, really cool !

good luck with sourcing funding hope it goes well for you both

not too shabby. I would go back to the color correction and try to play around a little more with what you have. A few of the iamges looked flat and im sure with a little more tweaking you could achieve something much greater ( especially for the colouring of the blood )

Strange thing about making blood is if its too red, comes off purplish in light, try to make it a little more brown red, so cc it to that and see what happens.

Honest feedback? It's way cool! The ONLY part that seemed a bit off was the "FRACTURED" text that stayed fractured and stayed on-screen for a while longer than the rest of the tempo suggested. Otherwise, great camera work and lighting! :)

Thanks to everyone for the great comments!

The shot of the little girl at the end of the hallway, coming towards the camera, was not even planned. It was one of those things that sometimes happens during the course of shooting that really ends up working. We had just finished up shooting at the other end of the hallway. The idea was to record some sound in the hallway. Rather than have the camera pointing at a bare wall, I turned it around to at least capture visuals of the sound that we were going to record. Immediately I grabbed Don who was busy directing and showed him what was on the monitor. That shot gets the most comments and it ended up on all of our promotional materials.

I guess whoever said "Shoot first, ask questions later", really knew what they were talking about!

i thought it was sweet too, i just wish the trailer would let me know about the plot...i didn't get much of that...

great images and awesome sound tho...

yeah, try and make all the images similar colors like a dark blue or slight purple or something. that was amazing though, my favorite part was going up the stairs, reallllly good. how did you do that text affect? was it a plug in that you bought?

I didn't do the editing but I think the text effects were done using After Effects. Thanks for all the great feedback!

the camera angles were great. It made you feel uneasy, which is good for a horror flick. sound, editing, cinematography, all great. good work.

Hey Vampiresoup,

I didn't think that there was enough "acting" in this short teaser to really be able to form much of an opinion at all. Since I didn't have anything to do with the acting, I would be very genuinely interested in what it was that you didn't care for.
