PS Store vs FS100

Thanks Matty_g for chiming in.

Just an update. I still haven't looked at the footage in my computer and see how the fs-100 divides the files between partitions, (it has to partition a drive bigger than 100gig) but I'm assuming it just splits it on the spot without a frame drop.

But I recorder about 10 HRS OF CONTINUOUS FOOTAGE yesterday without a hitch. I'll take a look at the footage soon. but I'm sure its all fine.

I'll keep you posted.

Hey SINIARCH well done man.
By the way i loved " in your face".
Would be nice if u wanted to deliver here in BRAZIL.
The market is in AFFAIR with the P2 right now.
As u solved your tests let me know.
Good work Bro
Cheers

hanks for the updates Siniarch. Ten hours is just going to be wonderful. I have a load of weddings next year who want it all in HD and this will solve the problem easy.

Ok Guys,

Just took a look at the video and WHAMO!!! BAM!!! KABBOOMM!!!!.
the FS-100 mounts as 2 Hard Drives. I have them as E: and F:

E: (125gigs) had one file 6 hrs 01 min 44 sec 0 frames
F: (107gigs) had one file 5 hrs 20 min 58 sec 5 frames

when I say one file I mean the P2 Select read it as one file. Its a bunch of MXF files referenced together to form one.
I placed them on the time line back to back, and didn't drop a frame. So I'm happy to announce this test gave me a total of:

11 hrs 22 mins 42 sec 5 frames.

Not bad if you ask me. As far as power, I think you will definitely have to get 2 Tekkeon MP3400 and you might get the full 11hrs worth of run time.

Not bad, Not BAD!!!!

FS 160 etc

FS 160 etc

Hello, Your guys sound like you know the FS 100 well, any comments regarding their newer FS 160 ?

I use a P2 spx800, via FW400 I record directly to an AVID bin using 24pa.

I have also used HD Rack non Adobe version.

However, the above won't work for non ac situations and thus a question:

When using the FS100, can I power the unit from the SPX800 12 v output connector ?

I sometimes have a 12hr shoot, using batteries I power down every 20 mins for up to 10 mins, What is the power up time period for a FS 100 ?

Many thanks,

Patrick

well Patrick,

I have an FS-100 and I really like it. The FS-160 is brand new and I'm assuming will work as well as the 100 with 60% more storage.

What I didn't like about the unit was the storage limitations. So that's why I made my modifications.

As far as powering it from your camera, I believe it needs 15v. not sure if it will run on 12v?

And for the battery time, the included battery only last about 1hr - 1.5hrs. there is an extended battery for around $150 that last double that. but I suggest a solution like the tekkeon. it lasted about 5hrs for me, + the 1.5hrs of the on board FS-100 battery.

Make sure you read this whole post and you will see what I'm talking about.

Thanks,

Luis

Patrick,
You could purchase the AB-WKHD100 and the Universal Mount from Anton Bauer and along with that comes a pig tail that will connect the FireStore to the AB Battery. And this will have it hitch on the back side of the battery, sort of where a wireless mic would go. You also need the cradle from Firestore.

Best,

Jan

Thanks Jan and Luis, I shoot sometimes 12hr but have to often turn the spx800 AB off to conserve power, what is the start up time for the FS160 ? I have no access to ac, except a 3 min walk up the hill where I could stage some battery chargers. It's a big job and I don't want to mess this up, I have been using a laptop with HD Rack (non Adobe) as well as shooting live to an AVID bin (Newscutter). But for the upcoming job I am outdoors and I have trouble seeing the PC screen and the distraction of worrying about the PC is a problem too (FW cable mught slip out etc).

Many thanks,

Patrick

Thanks, last Q is the deal breaker, I will have to often shut down the spx800 AB to conserve DICONIC160 battery power, will the FS160 be able to quickly power up and be ready to record ? Thanks, Patrick

PS: I can't buy 16gb cards as there is no driver yet (due in Nov) and my important shoot is Nov 4th.

well patrick,
Start up time for the FS-100 is about 1 min. maybe 30 sec. I really haven't timed it. but if this is so crucial to you, why not get the Tekkeon batteries like I said. if you have 2 of them, you can power the thing up for about 11hrs or so without shutting down the power. you can even get three and then you know you'll always be on.
As for storage, your shoot is 12hrs, but how much footage are you actually capturing?
You can buy the FS-100 and send it to me to get modded. then you can buy from me the 250gb. hd. and you would have 11hrs20mins record time.
just a thought.

Hi Luis, I shoot during a 12hr shoot maybe 4 to 5 hrs of actual video but maybe every once in awhile I can power down for 10mins at a time. Patrick

So Patrick... it sounds pretty straight forward to me... you either go with DVrack or get an FS-100 + 250GB drive + have Luis modify it for you.

It sounds like he's got it worked out. I am sure he'll be testing further before your shoot. Or you can go with DV rack and just deal with it... maybe get a hood for the laptop.... a bright LCD...?

I am wondering how long I'll have the HVX but I think the modded FS-100 might be the solution for many... I would only add a step to the work flow to back up at lunch time or whenever possible. But it really shouldn't be any more dangerous than having your footage on the un-modded FS-100 other than any flimsy connections to watch out for added by the mod itself. However judging by Luis' background I am sure he designed/is designing a way to have it enclosed or otherwise tough enough.

What's the total Luis for the 11hs + including the FS and all?

hey Roberto,

I'd get something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FOCUS-FIRESTORE...ryZ21166QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Then upgrade to version 4. I highly recommend upgrading to version 4 because it handles splitting partitions better than the previous versions.

So you are looking at $1300 for the drive.

Then as I've stated above, these would be the estimated introductory prices.

siniarch said:
I'm estimating that the introductory price will be aroud $385 for the mod. Then
siniarch said:
The 100 gig drive = $200-225 (estimated) ($2.25 peg gig)
the 160 gig drive = $275-300 (estimated) ($1.88 per gig)
the 250 gig drive = $375-400 (estimated) ($1.60 per gig)

I might even offer a 60 gig for $175 or so. ($2.92 per gig)
[/quote]

so For $1300 for the FS-100 + $385 of the mod = $1685 you get one FS-Forever.
The price from BH Photo for the FS-100 is $1699.
The price form BH Photo for the FS-160 is $2149.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...arch=yes&O=productlist.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t

after the initial $1685 for the FS-Forever, you can just buy drives as needed. as I've stated before, these drives could be used as tapes to archive the footage.

ex. You go and shoot a wedding. you know it will be 4hrs, so you buy the $225 100gig drive. Shoot the wedding at 720pn and get it all in one drive. You add between $150-$200 storage fee to your invoice. Now, you dump the footage from your 100gig drive to your editing suite. once you are done, you just store the drive in your safe and:
  • No burning extra DL-DVD to store all the footage
  • No backing up to Expensive Tape Systems
  • No Time spent Archiving
  • You always have imediate backup of original files in case your Editing HD fails.
  • You can always give the HD to your client and have them store their footage themselves.
With the time and hassel you save, it definitely is worth the price of the HD. Also, you can have extra HD in case the party runs long or the HD is having failures. With the FS-100 or FS-160, once you run out of space, you have to dump to a computer. (if you have one and waste 20-40mins) or if the drive is malfunctioning, then you are done for the day. (hopefully you brought MiniDV tapes as back up)

I think in your last sentence you meant to say HDD instead of HD right?

So after modding it you void the warranty?
If so there is no need to get a new one... and the "official" price is $1700

right?

Hey Roberto,

You are right, I meant to say Hard Disk Drive. (I refer to them as Hard Drives but I see how HD can be confused with High Definition)

I'm actually not sure if opening the FS-100 would void the warranty. I can only assume that it would. What I can tell you is that I will make it so the FS-100 would be able to be put back together and seem as though you never opened it.

I believe the warranty on a product is only in effect if there is a defect in crafstmanship or if the electronics fail. The modification I'm making should not alter anything of that sort. So if the unit fails, (electronically speaking) my opinion is that it should be covered under warranty.

And yes, the price for a new FS-100 on BH as per my last visit to their web site was $1700.

Well if it doesn't have a sicker or anything else that would prove it was opened... and if there is no visible marks such as soldering, scratches, etc... then there is no worries... I guess you are un-plugging the existing drive and plugging a cable in.

So it may be best to go with a new one... but that is a different decision to be made by each one of us.

Hi Guys, I ordered the FS-100 for my SPX800 as they didn't have the newer 160 version out yet.

Anyway, I asked them to send me an Anton Bauer FS-100 cradle box and it's power supply 12v cable so I could power FS-100 from the AB Gold Mount batery. But they can't find the part ! It's number : AB-WKHD100

Anyone know where I can get it ?

Thanks,

Patrick
