how does protools work? is it for live recording only? when i download video/audio does the audio go thru the protools/digi 002 or does protools only come into play once all the audi/video is already downloaded into avid?
Pro Tools does both live recording and post mixing.
The typical work flow for post work is to edit the seq (preferably using an Avid NLE), export an OMF or AAF of the seq, import the OMF/AAF into Pro Tools, mix the sound and ouput. Output can be anything from a stereo wav file that's laid back in the NLE to laying back directly to video tape.
I think it would help if your clarified your use of the term "downloading". Do you mean digitizing, i.e. capturing a live source such as a voice over? Or do you mean importing, such as bringing a wave file into the Avid? Or do you mean outputing, such as laying off to tape directly out of the Avid?
I don't have first hand experience with the 002, but it's my understanding that it works similar to the way that Digi's Pro Control works. You play back your timeline and make adjustments on the mixer, the fader position (pan position, etc.) are recorded into PT - this is mixing on the fly. For VO recording you should be able to use the 002 to set levels going into the box. Again I'm unclear on what you're asking because I don't know what you mean by downloading.
when i shoot something to tape, then go home and capture what i shot into the avid, can i use protools during this process for the audio? what id like to do is manipulate the audio on fly thru protools while i capture audio/video off the tape into the avid?
