Protection Filter

It seems that a protective filter over your lens is a good idea (in theory anyways). How would I be altering the visible picture if I used a UV protection filter as opposed to just clear glass?

I think that you'd be doing yourself a favor by getting a UV filter. The UV blocks out extra rays of UV light, which allows the camera to get a more accurate color rendition and crisper images. The UV also doubles as a great lens protector. :)

OK. But what is it doing to the image? Sharpening? What does it "filter" out in the visible spectrum? Also, would it uneccesarily disturb the image under tungsten studio lighting conditions? How?

The UV does nothing but to unsharpen the image and create more lens flares (a lot if it's cheap), and protect your lens from scratches. Not from heavy objects flying towards the lens!

The lens on the DVX already has UV coating. After I got my matte box, I've never used the UV again.
