ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (HQ)

I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death... I've read the Apple info and done some searching and still can't figure out why I would choose one over the other. If your system can handle it, is there any reason not to choose ProRes 422 (HQ)? Footage is 720PN shot with the HPX170. There will some VFX and compositing work done on it as well as color correction.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

The rule of thumb that I keep seeing is that if you are working w/greater than HD footage (2K, 4K, etc.,) then use HQ otherwise just regular ProRes.

Neither. Edit native from that camera. You can't convert when you import it. Edit DVCPRO HD native. If you want ProRes finals, just make a ProRes sequence and render.

Woah!!!!

Missed that one completely.

Use log and transfer to ingest DVCProHD 720pn footage to DVCProHD. The mxf files are unwrapped and rewrapped in QT. Edits like butter.

But abolutely no reason to convert mxf DVCProHD files to pro res. DVCProHD is intraframe, 4:2:2 footage.

So if I understand correctly, my footage is already DVCPRO HD and I should keep it DVCPRO HD and not do anything with ProRes?

what about AVC-I-100 form a HPX300 ?? there is no AVC intra setting in FCP? I always use prores HQ because it will take anything but maybe prores is already enough ???

There is no AVCI setting in FCP. You can import as AVCIntra, and use a ProRes sequence if you want.
Or convert to ProRes and use those settings.

I do always "log and transfer" and put it on a prores HQ sequence. What happens during log and transfer ??? Is it than already converted to prores HQ ???

How can I import as AVCI ???

There is no AVCI setting in FCP. You can import as AVCIntra, and use a ProRes sequence if you want.
Or convert to ProRes and use those settings.

With P2 media, you log and transfer. You can choose native AVCIntra, or to transcode to ProRes. What this process does is convert the footage to QT, which FCP is designed to work with. It doesn't work with MXF natively. Not without third party solutions like Calibrated, MXF4MAC or Raylight.

When you choose AVCIntra, all FCP does is take the audio and video MXF files, joins them and wraps them into a QT wrapper. ZERO transcoding, zero quality loss. But there are no sequence settings for AVCintra, so you must use a ProRes sequence. It stays AVCintra until you render, then it becomes ProRes. If you choose to TRANSCODE to ProRes, then FCP converts the footage to ProRes as it imports into FCP. It becomes ProRes both ways...but with one way you import faster, but have to render...but have smaller file sizes. The other way, Transcoding, you are ProRes native and no rendering until you add effects.

"How can I import as AVCI ???"

In the LOG AND TRANSFER preferences you can change the format you import the footage.
