I have a 24p prores timeline which I want to export using compressor. The normal dvd setting doesn't seem to work with 24p or 30p setting. What should I do to get a good hd to sd conversion for dvd?

Thanks

I export 24p DVCProHD footage to self contained, and use Compressor's presets all the time without issue.

What issues can you specify?

Well, on the 30p setting, which is somewhat bearable but not great, I get interlace lines around corners of things in focus. And on 24p, the footage is just jerky, looks like it is skipping frames or something.

For eg. I have a shot of a train passing by, all the way across the frame. The motion on both settings just looks wrong, the train jumps ahead a few frames every frame, or something like that. I don't know what to call it.

But I'm using 'export using compressor' and not the way you are, with a self contained file and then to compressor. Maybe I should try that, but I really don't think that's the thing either.

I read somewhere on the internet that it looks good when converted into uncompressed hd, but then I don't know what settings to use (like pixel aspect etc) and again, I just feel that's not it either.

Is the compressor setting you are using one of the defaults or have you changed any of the preset settings?

What do you mean it doesn't work- you can't make a DVD or it doesn't look good? Or interlacing issue or what?

Well does the ProRes version you have look good in QT Player? If so the standard MPEG-2 settings with 23.98 frame rate should do the trick. Of course DVD is never going to look as good as ProRes.

Maybe avoid going directly from FCP to compressor.
Try exporting from FCP to a quicktime movie (ie FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE)
Then go back to your OSX finder and use quicktime to play it frame by frame and look for interlacing jagged edges.
If you see them your sequence settings in FCP might need altering.

If you are good, then open compressor and drop the file on. Select your designated settings.
Should be in the Apple folder, DVD folder, select 90 mins best quality (or 120 or 150 if needed).
Compressor should take it from there.
