Hello

I am working with the Sony Ex1 and I need to off load the cards to my MacBook Pro & External hard drive.

Is there a proper off loading procedure or can i just copy and paste the cards files on to my laptop and external hard drive?

Thanks,
Cristina

PS - i will be using Sony's clip browser software to double check the footage.

Open and use the free Sony Clip browser with CRC (cyclical redundancy checking) checked and data protection checked in preferences. This will insure exact copy over to your hard drive, something you are not guaranteed with copy and pasting.

Thanks!

So Once i have those checked do i just import the footage? I used to Copy and paste the info form the card into folders on my desk top.

Also the SxS card will fit into the card slot on the side of my laptop yes? I have a MacBook Pro.

Thanks again!

I haven't really bothered with the clip browser software since I first installed and tried it. I use it to quickly check clips occasionally without having to open up Final Cut.

I usually just pop the SxS card into the side of the Macbook Pro, copy the BPAV folder onto a hard drive, then import later in Final Cut through "Log and Transfer."

And that one day when you have a corrupted file because you copy and pasted you'll question whether you should have used clipbrowser with crc.
There are no guarantees but the possibility of a little added protection for important footage doesn't hurt and thats what clip browser with crc checked will give you. If theres a copy error copy and paste won't tell you but CRC will.

You can name the clips and add descriptive info in clip browser. SxS, MxR, MxM will fit in your macbook pro expresscard slot.

Its best to just play and all your questions will be answered.

Also clip browser is at version 2.5. Earlier version may have missing functions.

Heres a tutorial pdf file:

@ boweevil98:

You may want to check this little video out:

I need to remake this from the ground up as it was slapped together in a bit of a rush quite a while back now, but you might find it illuminating.

It's using XDCAM Transfer rather than Clip Browser, which I prefer for reasons that will be obvious in the video, but then again I also use ShotPut if I need to offload in the field. Luckily I now have enough cards to only offload when I'm off set/in the suite, and delete cards only after the job is complete, but not everyone has that workflow.

I use Clip Browser to transfer clips to our Western Digital portable hard drive (buss powered) via our MacBook Pro laptop. (I need to learn how to make slick screen casts like Matt!)

Then when I get back to the office I use XDCAM Transfer to name all the clips and import them into Final Cut Pro.

I like how Clip Browser automatically links clips together that span more than one care. Plus, you should use Clip Browser because this is what Sony says about transferring using the Finder:

"To archive media from an SxS card to hard disc or other media, the Sony XDCAM EX ClipBrowser application must be used. Copying individual clips via the Macintosh Finder will result in unusable media on the target drive."
