Proper filter diameter for the AG-HMC40?

Hi there everybody.

I'm feeling like an idiot right about now! Since even before I actually got my HMC40, I'd planned to buy a three-piece (UV-CPL-FLD) filter kit for it, and also a ND filter.. Everything I'd read said that the camera had a 43mm filter diameter, so I'm thinking "no brainer"! Well I ordered the stuff and the ND filter (Tiffen ND 0.6) came today.. Says 43mm all over it but after taking off the inner and outer lens hood of the camera, it is clear that the filter is too small to screw into the mount!

I don't get this.. Was there some other diameter or figure I overlooked?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

Strange. 43mm is indeed the correct thread size. I know this because I have a 43mm Tiffen UV on my HMC40 right now, and I removed both the inner and outer lens hoods yesterday to install my Century Optics .65x WA lens. No problems with either one.

I have no idea what to tell you, kind sir.

OH. MY. GOD.

It does fit after all.

I had initial put the filter in and it seems loose, and I didn't even try screwing it in, I just took it out, came here and complained.

SORRY GUYS!! I'll try to experiment a little further before wasting your time in the future!

You owe me 45 seconds, Butch. I'll run a tab for you. :D

Care to tell us more about what you're shooting and how you're liking the HMC40?

Hey there.. I've just got the HMC40 so the only shooting I've done so far is in an abandoned dinosaur-themed park from the sixties.. I left most of the settings in auto due to the fact that I snuck in to the park.. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not.. I'll be able to color correct some of the stuff in Premiere though. I will be using the camera for music videos, shorts and some event stuff here and there.

I did buy Barry's book and have read it since then (and will be re-reading certain sections). I came from a GL2 which also has bad low-light, so this camera seems about the same in that respect.. It has a lot of great features though.. So far, I like it!

Thanks again..

Nick

Yeah, Barry's book (like everything he does) is an indispensable piece of gear. Read it. Learn it. Know it. And it'll make your shooting exponentially better.

Can't wait to see your illegally-captured, dino-themed park footage. :D

Cheers!

I just got the Hmc$0 and was wondering if some one would make a video on how to take off the outer and inner lens hood. im trying to connect a 72mm 0.3x fisheye and i have with a 43-72mm step up but i want the fisheye closer to the lens cause then it will be wider

just unscrew the inner one....
as for the outer hood, twist it CCW a few degrees and you should hear it snap off, then just pull it out

The manual explains it pretty well with pictures and everything. The outer hood is the big square plastic thing. Once you remove it, you'll see there's a small 16x9-shaped "inner hood" within the lens barrel, which is also removable.
