Proper Exposure with Slog2 and the Odessey 7Q

Are you addressing the gamma from linear to a 2.2 contrast? The RAW will look horribly dark and contrasty if you do not. The RAW file is linear data so it must have gamma correction. That should be your very first step.

I just began shooting with the 7Q 4K2HD SLOG , and I too find the image very noisy- this is after grading. I suppose it's not surprising there is noise at ISO 2000 when Mitch is rating the FS700 sensor at 800 and SLOG can only shoot at a minimum of 2000 ISO. Though like many have said, the noise is "nice" noise- feels like film grain...why must SLOG be shot at a minimum of 2000?

I plan on shooting some tests (4K2HD) of REC 709 (800%) with lower ISO's and see how they feel against comparable SLOG at 2000. Love the DR of SLOG but it seems to be at the expense of NOISE.

Interested to see any sample video here in the group if you are able to get a clean image out of ISO 2000 SLOG 4K2HD before a de-noiser is used. Many Thanks!!

Actually I don't remember anyone talking about overexposing the 4K to Prores. The 4K to Prores (4K2HD) can actually be exposed pretty normally. If I'm in Rec709 800% or SLOG2 I'll expose a bit to the right or use the onboard LUTs. They actually work decently well there.

It is the RAW stuff everyone feels strongly about ETTR is the correct choice. Good shots by the way! I wanna see the vid!

I do. It's still a little noisy for my tastes - but it's not too bad, I think, because a lot of the noise is hidden in the conversion.

The way to go is to set the zébra of the fs700 and the odyssey 7q to 90% and not allow it to flash.
Just go to the limit just before flashing.

The results are awsome and even dark area are exposed properly.

In terms of exposure compensation this goes between -0,3 to + +0,7 stop based on my expérience and what my 90% indicated to me.

What do you recommend the zebras be set to for skin tones?

Exposing the FS700 I find is a very precise task. ETTR does not give me the best results. I try to expose skin, or subjects of interest, in the middle, with a smidge to the right, like 60-70 IRE max. 40-70 seems to be where the most beautiful detail of the sensor and data stream is at. The highs get compressed and the lows have noise (increasingly).

Would it help lowering the detail in the PP. ?
I agree to the earlier comments that it would be nice to be able to shoot slog-2 at less than iso 2000 - the noise (although nice) is quite apparent in some scenarios.

I've been manually correcting gamma, not having found a LUT that works acceptably. My workflow goes thru Resolve 11 out to Media Composer 8. What is your recommended approach to adjusting the Gamma function, Mitch? The C-D LUTs really don't work that well, so, I'm curious if you have another method. The best method I have in my toolbox is an ACES workflow, which seems to reset gamma for me.

none of settings in PP is affected when you record to the Odyssey except gamma sLog, REC709, REC709 (800%)

I like ACES as well and I have asked that we create our own ingest setting for our Cinema DNGs created from the FS700 as well as now the FS7.
