Proper Exposure outdoors?

I love the D90's LCD, but how do you guys get some accurate exposure without blowing out the footage or possibly underexpose it?

I am shooting at a beach tomorrow and to expose as best as possible off the LCD, I'll be hanging some duvatyne over myself and the camera. Works great.

That's what I was thinking throwing a shirt or something over myself and the cam LCD and evaluate from there...

Anybody else? Lol i don't think theres many options after that?

i often zoom in on the shadows, the lcd not the lens, and expose down until they just go black. this both cuts down on noise and gives you the best possible latitude. if you want to protect your highlights that's harder without zebras, but i've found the lcd to be pretty useful still, since it really shows the slight variations even near clipped.
