Proper 16x9 advice

Im working on a project where the producer wants everything to be shot in 16x9. Its been shot partly DV and partly in HDV and its mostly done but now im stepping in w/ my DVX to get some final shots.

Here's my issue, everythings been shot anamorphic to match the HDV downconversion. I've been shooting on Sqeeze but the LCD image is not 16x9. When i captured and set to anamorphic the image looked all right but not on the monitor. The DVX book said it should be so i wondering if im doing something wrong or if thats just how it is. Basically just some 16x9 advice since i never shoot it...Thanks

If you shoot squeeze...you will edit with widescreen settings in your editor. Your editor will display the footage correctly in the source and/or trim windows. When you view this footage on an external 4:3 monitor...everything will look skinny. But this same footage will look normal on a 16:9 television.

A lot has to do with your final output...
For 16:9 tape output...edit project with widescreen settings.
For 4:3 tape output...edit with 4:3 settings, scale footage down in editor. It will be letterboxed.
For DVD output...edit with widescreen settings. Export using a widescreen setting with you media encoder. The DVD player will letterbox footage shown on a 4:3 television, and show footage full screen on a 16:9 television.

Hope this helps.

Well it actually isnt anamorphic, Im not sure what NLE your using so cant help with how you should treat it.

I think Sacksnack's information is correct. That's the way I handle anamorphic footage too. The only thing I am still looking for is to add to the letterboxed video also a WSS flagging which would result in an auto display switch (full 16:9) when a letterbox VHS copy is being played back on a widescreen TV.

Ok well Ill put it another way.... if your interpreting your footage as anamorphic (once again not sure of your NLE) its incorrect. It should be interpreted as 16:9 1.2. For example Premiere Pro handles Anamorphic as 2:1 2.0.

Indeed I just verified: APP is to my knowledge the only NLE which excludes "widescreen" (16/9) in the category of anamorphic video
