Promotional Video for Kids Camp

Hey all,

I recently produced/filmed/edited a 10 minute Promotional Video for this UCLA kids camp that I volunteer for every year, using a Canon XH-A1, Rode NTG-2 microphone and edited on Final Cut Pro. The target audience are potential donors (from college students, families, to corporate sponsors)

My big problem is this: The people I would generally ask to give me constructive feedback are actually a part of this organization, so it's difficult to be objective about it having gone through this experience.

The main areas I feel I need to develop include the pacing, the ability to convey the themes clearly to an audience with no prior understanding of the camp, and overlaying of general footage over the interviews.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, from detailed comments to high-level thoughts. This is an extremely important organization to me and the people involved with it, so I want to do whatever I can to portray this camp as accurately as possible.

Thanks so much!

Try to keep your posts to one area ;)

Good video. i make a lot of promo videos where I work and this was solid. It helps that you have good content, and a generally uplifting story to tell. Always makes it easier when it's a good story to begin with.

I didn't like the opening VO line... "always crazy, cars honkin their horns and all that..." I understand what it's saying, but i don't like the way it's said. Was kind of jarring.

Nothing you can do about it now, but on your interviews, a bounce card could have helped. I'm guessing power was either non-existent or limited. Use a white sheet or foamcore and get some more light into the talent's faces. Some were better than others.

Oh, no gawdy sunglasses either. That one girl looks ridiculous.

Mic shadow around 3:23?

I noticed once the interviewee repeated the question in their answer. This was good, as it told me what I was going to hear about. I'd do this with the first response you edit in whenever possible. (rule of thumb I always ask my interviewees to do that)

Lots of hugs at the end, might be a bit too much, but considering who your target audience is you should probably keep that.

You have a couple instances of some old-time footage it seems... perhaps push that to the right side of your frame and on the left add a quick graphic that tells us what year it is or something.

It's early, that's all i can think of right now.

I will also add that in my youth I had some rough times and was heavily into some bad things. A science teacher got me to go camping one year and being in that environment with those people was the starting point to my recovery. I have gone camping with that school group, now as a chaperone, for the last 7 years. There really is something about getting away from the city life and discovering yourself...

Had to password protect the link: "formula" is the password.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone else have any other thoughts?
