Prometheus trailer

You know I realized the one thing that annoyed me about this movie right off the bat was Noomi's assumption that they were going to meet 'the engineers' of the human race. Based on what evidence? A couple cave paintings? Pretty shoddy science. Worse, she is actually right, so basically any mystery the film could have sustained is deflated before the second reel. Seems it would have been much better if they didn't know what they were going to find. Slowly, they figure out that these people were our descendants. As is, because they revealed one mystery too early, they had to add a bunch of other inexplicable stuff to build some mystery back into the story, but they painted themselves into a corner. This film is an exercise in frustration, which is why I think it's creating such divisive reactions in people. The way some people are talking about it, you'd think it's the worst movie ever made, and it's not at all. Just incredibly frustrating.

Well she assumes so it comes more from the heart and not from facts plus she is a believer....eg God believes in God etc etc.

But nevermind that....every other film the hero or heroin assumes something and get a huge bite in the ass ..... I mean to say that always happens in movies :)

But if she believes in the God of the bible (which her Christian cross would indicate), why would she assume they are 'engineers' in the plural. Runs counter to Christian theology for her to expect an alien race that created us. She would expect or hope to find the one God. If she really believes in this Chariots of the Gods life seeding idea she'd throw that cross out the window. But really it's her stating that assumption up front, an assumption proven more or less correct, and the way it deflates any sense of mystery in the story, that I object to. It was a discordant note right off the top that nagged at me through the whole movie, even if I couldn't articulate that while I was watching it.

I don't blame anyone for being disappointed in it; I felt that way about The Dark Knight, just as deeply. Sometimes you just hope for something you don't get.

For me, it was what I was hoping for; I enjoyed it quite a bit. Fit very well with Alien and Aliens. I can see why Cameron wants to direct the sequel.

Sure, I had some nits. But they sure weren't deal-breakers for me.

For me, even what I got from this movie doesn't work. Every move has flaws if you look for them, but the question is do those flaws matter? In my opinion, the flaws in Prometheus do critical damage and ultimately sink the ship. The thing just doesn't hold together. Even on its own terms. Some movies shouldn't really be picked apart as much as this one has because their intentions weren't very lofty to begin with. But the ambitions of this film are just asking for people to hold it up to a pretty high level of scrutiny, a scrutiny it doesn't withstand.

Her god, plural or not there was a time men believed in Gods and not just one God.
But I see it like this she is a scientist who has a strong christian background ..and is in a situation where she has proof of ET that somehow has a connection to the origin of man.
Their goal as was Weilan was to find the creator(s) and ask what was the meaning of it all...

She just assumed/or a had faith that the creator would be peacefull creatures/being....I had no problems with that. like a child finding her long lost father or mother.. no hostility.
But yes there were somethings that could have been explained better .. I read somewhere that the first cut was 2 hours and 27 minutes long.

Well, like I said, that describes to a T how I felt about TDK. So, I get ya, I really do.

Well exactly, it's one thing for a film to have one or two blanks to fill, but this has massive essay length holes that need filling throughout the entire movie. I don't think more explanations would have fixed the movie because I think it has basic structural flaws but, asking the viewer to do ALL the heavy lifting of a story when you haven't even given them satisfactory information to begin with just alienates the audience. An audience will work for a movie as they love solving mysteries, but they need enough information to go on and a reason to care.

actually thought the story was really simple...didnt feel like I needed to work for anything. ...I want to see that 27 minutes though.

The story isn't confusing, it just leaves so many threads hanging that any thought expended on them leads down a rabbit hole of questions and logical inconsistencies. The more it is explored the more it totally falls apart as a story, and this is a movie that begs to be picked apart. If it was just a dumb thrill ride I wouldn't bother, but it's clear the film has greater aspirations than that. But that's what's so frustrating about the movie. It starts seeming like it's an intelligent, intriguing sci-fi film and degenerates into a run of the mill horror flick.

Couldn't have said it any better. That's exactly how I felt.

The story is far from confusing, pretty straight forward actually. Almost from the get go. Great right up to the pair of clowns crying and wanting to go home.

What's dumb is all the stupid decisions and action sequences that have little to no intensity/thrill to them. All jam packed into the last half.
And I have to laugh that she still wants to go after the Engineers after she saw what one of them did.

She wants answers, I know. They kind of hit us over the head with that about a million times.

At least IF there is a sequel I won't have to deal with a bunch of morons I know/care little about, dying off every few minutes.

The exact same can be said of Alien.

Seriously, I watched it again last night for the first time in years, and it follows the same arc. Starts out slow and contemplative, building an atmosphere, and then turns into to people acting inconsistently, contradicting themselves, and doing stupid things which get them killed. And Ripley only survives in the shuttle because the alien, inexplicably, decides to take a nap.

If you watched Alien as a new film today, would you not come to all the same conclusions?

I just watched it two weeks ago. Still holds up for me.
One thing, the pacing is very different. Nice slow burn. The other, I got to know the characters. Another reason, they actually SPOKE to one another, made decisions TOGETHER. They cared about what was going on and worried about people!

Not like on Prometheus, oh, you two bozos who got lost, you're alien bait. Good luck while I get laid.

They didn't leave an alien baby on the ship and go... oh well, I'm sure it will be fine.

The list goes on.

Sure, ALIEN wasn't perfect, but it was damn close. Only 1 or 2 issues here and there. Not 10 or 15.
