Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Damn! I had my fingers crossed for you guys! :( :'(

That was great! I watched without getting bored! I was into it! I loved how it went from "cheap looking video" to cinematic style pans and dollies! I was cracking up!

Hey. **** those bastards for not getting you into the TOP 10.

But you made it to the TOP 50 and you keep pushing! Your optimism is inspiring! Keep shooting!

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

the bio suprised me, at first i just felt sorry for the two. Then it really picked up and interested me. Good luck guys, the hardest thing to find in my opinion is someone else who shares the same ambition as you do. looks like you've already found each other.

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

I wish I had that one 'dude' type that I could feed off. :(

Oh well. :D

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Thanks for the feedback - I appreciate it alot!

John - I'm glad you liked our little 'joke' at the beginning. The guidelines for the bio stated to avoid filming yourself talking to the camera on the couch, so our approach was to fall into this cliche, and then hit them hard with our own stylistic approaches.

It's definitely nice to have a friend to make films with - it's also nice to have some one to feel for you once you get kicked out of the Greenlight competition! ;)

One thing we tried to replicate in our bio video, as I said earlier, is our stylistic approaches. I (Scott) like to use handheld sometime, with a raw feel - though I use dolly shots many times. I'm a fan of modern cinema, with DPs like Rodrigo Prieto w/Amores Perros & 25th Hour. Bryan loves classic cinema (as stated in the bio video) and so we went with a smoother feel for his.

We also mirror this stylistic approach w/our 3-minute scene, "Amber" which you can view via our website, though I know some of you have already. We utilized handheld & dolly movements in this scene to replicate our DP styles.

At any rate, thanks for the feedback & support - keep it coming if you have anything to add!

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Just keep shooting and stay busy. There's another Greenlight next year; but even so, so what. You guys have obvious talent and will only get better as you mature as artists.

The future is wide open baby! Internet and DV = EXPOSURE.

I got the joke and loved it. I noticed it immediatley (cheap to stylistic) and thought it worked great! Keep hammering films out!

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

for some reason i cant view this bio video. a page with a bunch of html code comes up instead. =/

anywhere else where we might be able to view this piece?

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Do you have the latest WM player? (9)

Are you on a Mac?

Try RIGHT CLICKING and saving as although mine opened right up with WM9.

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Hey XDOGX,

I had the same problem and I'm on a Mac.

I looked at the code and I looked at the URL of that page and noticed they were similar but different.

So, on a whim I tried this in the URL and it took me there. Try it...

http://want.arcostream.com/wantmusic0/liveplanet_pgl3/mbr_scottbeck_wm9.wmv

I think it has something to do with my Mac not liking ".asx" files.

BTW, the bio video is very clever and well-executed.

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

thanks john and terry. =)

wow guys, your bio video was pretty awesome. i loved the dualing styles, and i liked the honest serious straight forward approach. too many people go the lame, overthetop comedy angle.

i wouldve loved to see you guys on next season's show. you wouldve put kyle and ephram to shame. =)

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

I agree with D.O.G here. I think you would have put Kyle and Ephram to shame.

But you know, it was clear to me from that season of greenlight that the judges chose those guys BECAUSE they made a "funny" bio trailer and not necessarily because they were the best choices. But I'll bet what put them over the top was the group interview when they were able to outline their ideas for what they would do with the script. A number of the other directors looked like they were too nervous to be clear headed in that meeting and that can sink you regardless of your skills on tape.

For my taste, I thought a number of the other directors had more vision but K&E were just better at selling themselves.

Do you guys think your age played a factor in not being chosen?

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Congrats on making the top 50! I thought the joke did not play that well , only now as I work with directors. Is because I've heard many a time "If they can't follow a simple direction" "Do not do an interview on a couch" Why would I hire them for more complex things. second is your sound. Most beggining filmmakers think this not important. They are so wrong, Can you say wireless. Just my 2 cents keep filmming guys!!! And welcome to the group! 8)

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm thinking that our age might have been a factor!  I mean, if somehow we ended up winning, it sounds strange to have two 19-year olds directing the picture, right?

Bryan and I knew it could only help us or hurt us - helping us with the 'Ben Affleck & Matt Damon' pitch, where we are young filmmakers trying to get a break.

However, I am glad that guys older than us (some by twice our age) made it into the top 10, because they probabably won't have many more opportunities like this.

Elvis - I agree, our sound wasn't the best on this project, yet we didn't have much time to play with it, and we had to actually shoot the whole video in a pinch because of prior engagements!  I've learned the importance of sound, especially with my last two features (some of it is terrible!)  I promise you that we do pay attention to sound when we are doing our projects - our next film "University Heights" is pretty evident of that.

At any rate, thanks again for the support!

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Scott,

Not to worry. You guys have proven that you have what it takes.

With more time and experience, you'll be get to where you want to be.

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

After watching your guys video, I watched the top 10 over at project greenlight. Everyone of them but the roadside one either completely annoyed the hell out of me, or had terrible production quality. I would have picked yours over most of the ones that made it. Especially that chick from NYC. That one had me ready to slap her. Anyhow good job.

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

I am so glad you guys are open to sugestions . Keep up the good work!

Re: Project Greenlight bio video - shot on DVX

Hey man that was a great video. It does suck that you didn't make into the top ten, but I reall respect that you're still happy for the older people in the business and you're not in a hurry to climb the ladder and be on top. Too many people in Hollywood are just out to make money (as stated in the vid) and I'm glad that your hearts are for the art and for the effect it has on people and not the money or fame or whatever other bullshit people use as their excuse to make crappy movies. You guys have something. Something special. Rock and roll and when they don't give you the deals just give em the finger and move on ;D nah don't give em the finger. Anyways great job and if i'm ever in Iowa I'd love to drop by and grab some coffee with you guys. Rock and Roll! and keep up the good work!
