progressive shooting and editing AND slowmo.

Ok, here's the thing, Im new to this whole 24p shooting.

I want to shoot a music video in 24p because it looks hot (im PAL by the way)...I'm assuming to do this Im going to have to edit in premiere PRO on a 24p timeline, I've seen people saying that so, thats what I assume.

BUT, I ALSO WANT to do the thing where you play back the audio at high speed on set getting the talent to lip sync at high speed. so when I slow it down in edit, it syncs together with the normal pace master.

god im bad at explaining.

Basically I want to have my cake and eat it,
24p cinilook footage AND around 50% slowmotion. for parts of the video,
Is it impossible to get smooth slowmotion at this rate shooting on cine look with the DVX? if so is there any way of getting something slow that still looks classy? ;)

also, I like the letterbox look, but I dont want widescreen Tvs to stretch the image RUINING my hard earned resolution ;).
If i treat it as a 4:3 film and just overlay bars like a graphic will 16:9 tvs still stretch to fit?

or will it stay put like a good little fake widescreen movie?

Im sure xdoanex uses fake letterboxing.

any help would be amazing, so sorry for the way this is written, it all kind of flew out of my brain in anticipation.

just to add:
This is possibly the best forum I've ever come across I've been reading as much of the forum as I can all day prior to posting this, learnt all about king barry (all hail) and I doff my hat to the professionals who countlessly answer the same dumb questions over and over again.

THANK YOU.

PAL cameras can't shoot 24P, but they can shoot 25P.  25P is what you want.  (sort of, as explained later).

Nope.  You'll use 25P and 50i, and edit on a 25P timeline.

Easy.  Shoot interlaced.  Do NOT shoot 25P.  Shoot interlaced mode.  Play the song at double speed, and shoot the footage at 50i interlaced mode.  On the timeline tell the footage to play back at 50% speed and the editing program will convert the 50i footage to be sort of like 25P... it should look very filmlike, have a 50% slow-mo effect, andy sync to the song.  Only drawback is it'll be lower in resolution.

Most definitely the widescreen TV will still stretch it out.  You can't shoot one format that will work with both.  The only way to do what you're asking is to distribute only on DVD, where the DVD player will adjust the aspect ratio automatically.

Thanks for saying so, we're all pretty proud of the forum.  But to keep it clear, Jarred's the king around here, I'm just the guy who types too much! :)

Re: progressive shooting and editing AND slowmo.

Ok,
thanks Barry,
If this is the case I might just shoot in 25p and ditch the slowmotion concept. (I wanted a little bit of 'filmlike' slowmotion (or as close to film as possible) and a LOT of 'filmlike' normal speed)

was hoping I could combine the two.

how bad would it look if i shot in 25p and slowed it down regardless?

I am at a loss, technology is failing me, why didnt they just make a 600fps setting ;)

Re: progressive shooting and editing AND slowmo.

is this an old question? no ones replying so Im assuming this topic has been covered, can someone point me in the right direction (this is a massive forum) thankyou. :)

Re: progressive

Re: progressive

25P is the second-worst format to try to slow down (24P is the worst). You'll get infinitely better results from slowing down 50i, as far as smoothness goes.

Re: progressive shooting and editing AND slowmo.

can I shoot the slowmo in 50i and the rest of the video in 25p and then edit them both in the same timeline?

im pretty set on filming 25p cini look.

Re: progressive shooting and editing AND slowmo.

That's how you'd do it with film, yes. Shoot your regular stuff at 25p, then for stuff that you want to be in slow motion, shoot that at 50i. You can edit it all on the same timeline (at least in Vegas, I don't know if other NLE's can).

Re: progressive shooting and editing AND slowmo.

oh genius, barry I think im in love with you.
Ok ill do that, I hope premiere Pro supports 50i in a 25p timeline.
anyone know?
Id look myself, but I dont own it yet.
cheers for all your help.
