Progressive scanned images and tapes

Hi guys,

This might seem like a stupid question but I'm a little confused with these formats... (talking PAL)

Are progressive images really 25 still images a second, or is there still some interlacing going on with them? I had a chat with my tech at school and he seems to suggest that the tape still captures some sort of interlaced image...

Could someone explain progressive scanned images for me and how they come off the tape when captured. Do progressive scan images play back on TV or do they need to be interlaced first?

Cheers, Phil

Eeep. I think that link will be needlessly confusing for 25p.

The PAL DVX actually "shoots" 25 progressive frames per second. But when it records to tape, it splits each frame into two interlaced fields, for 50i PAL standard. The tape can then be watched on any PAL TV, because it conforms to the standard. It will also retain the 25p aesthetic.

If you want to work in a progressive environment, combining the fields back into a single frame is a snap, because the two fields represent the same moment in time. You get a single, artifact-free frame.
