Progressive on Sony TRV60 ?

Hi.

As far as I know, there is no other gear on earth (semipro or consumer) than DVX100 to shoot video in progressive. Somebody having a TRV60 Sony claims for it, not in still, but on video. I say NO. But I found this sentence in a web page about TRV60:

"The TRV60 also facilitates sharp, still images from moving sequences thanks to its Progressive Recording Mode. These are written to DV tape which, when captured via FireWire, are claimed to produce pin-sharp frame grabs. The price of using all the pixels associated with both fields in each frame is, or course, a slight jerkiness on normal video playback due to the processing involved. However, it's the best way to acquire sharp frames from a sequence of moving images "

I find it confusing, because is talking about video in movement, not only stills.

Please clarify or give me the right arguments. I am still sure that progressive mode here is ONLY for still pictures.

Thanks.

Re: Progressive on Sony TRV60 ?

These are IMAGE SEQUENCES not progressive video stream. Due the processing these images "framerate" is 15fps or less...perhaps their resolution is higher than videoframe gives..."sharp frames" as they say ;)

Re: Progressive on Sony TRV60 ?

These are image sequences taken in progressive mode. This means that both fields are captured at the same time. If there is not too much motion and/or you set for high shutterspeeds, you'll get images with a higher vertical resolution, sometimes at the expense of aliasing effects if the image contains sharp transitions in vertical direction because vertical filtering like it is being applied in interlaced modes is significantly reduced.

Re: Progressive on Sony TRV60 ?

Many other cameras offer true progressive scan... the Sony VX2000/2100 and PD150/170 offer true progressive scan at 15 frames per second. The original Canon Elura (and some other Canon, I think it was a ZR or something) offered true 30P. The JVC HD1/HD10 offers 30P in HD, and 60P in standard-def (but not "DV") mode.

24P is the exclusive domain of the DVX (at the under-$20,000 price point). But some other cameras do have an implementation of legit progressive-scan.

Thanks for your comments.

Anyway, I still wonder why this consumer camera TRV60 claims Progressive Scan at 25P (I live in PAL world)

I though that only my DVX was able to do it ! :o

Somebody to clarify this ?

Re: Progressive on Sony TRV60 ?

This is not "true" progressive scan and yes, there is 25fps (I was wrong about 15fps) but this is more like Canon XL1's "frame mode"...no motion blur in frames because minimal shutter speed is 1/50s in progressive mode...no manual shutter controls in this mode.
