progressive for dummies?

So much for theory- what's the advantage of shooting progessive
if you don't have a plasma TV- In reality though- will anyone see the difference between 60i and say, 30p unless you've acess to -what - a HD monitor or projector for presentation.
(Using DVX100 and FCP4)
Planning a couple projects- narrative short and music video -
and I doubt if any local venues have such presentation equipment.
Actually I'd prefer to go 24p & in- camera anamorphic-
I hope this query makes some sense- JUST want to get the best looking images for my debts.

Re: progressive for dummies?

It's the highest resolution, and even if you're watching it on a 60i source, it not only "feels" sharper, but it gives you the juddery motion that is similar to 35mm film, which looks "professional".

Go progressive, ITS THE ONLY WAY ;D

Re: progressive for dummies?

On any TV, 30p and 60i will look markedly different. 30p will look film-like; 60i will look like a soap opera.

Re: progressive for dummies?

Soap opera! Ha- yeah if that ain't about it.
I've done informal tests with rented anamorphic and in cam 16x9- still not sure on that.
- but no (identical) comparison footage of 60i/ 30 &24p- guess I'll just have to do that- but still wonder what presentation setup is req'd to show prog footage at it's best. A 16x9 HD TV I guess.

Re: progressive for dummies?

Any progressive DVD playing back on a computer screen (laptop, desktop, etc.) will also show the benefits of progressive recording.

Re: progressive for dummies?

depends on how slow you want it...30P will get you PERFECT slow motion (if youre converting to 24P)....but it's not all that slow. 60i can get you a 50% speed decrease, but you lose resolution.

So it depends on the sequence specifically...

Re: progressive for dummies?

Exactly. 30P in a 24P timeline gives you the best, most accurate slow-motion you could ever get, but it's only a 20% slow-mo effect, so it's not all that slow.

For really slowing down your footage, you want to either use 30P played at half-speed, or 60i played at half speed. (actually, in a 24P timeline, you'd play these back at 40% speed). 30P will have more vertical resolution, but the slow motion will be choppier. 60i will have less vertical resolution, but the slow motion will be much smoother.
