Progressive DVD?

Hi guys,

I am trying to make a Progressive dvd in Avid, but I cannot seem to get it right. What messes up is during playback on dvd players, the video has this "ghosting" effect, kinda of like the shutter is too slow or something. Here are the steps that I have followed...

1. We shot the footage 24pA
2. Opened Avid and set the project settings to 23.976
3. In the Film and 24p settings, set video pulldown to advanced 2:3:3:2 and pulldown phase of timecode to A
4. Captured the footage and played it back in Avid and everything looks fine.
5. Exported the footage to a quicktime ref
6. Opened up Avid DVD and imported the video and audio files and changed the Field Dominance on the video to "Not Interlaced"
7. Burn then Burn disc

The video frame rate is 23.98 but when i burn the disc it goes to 29.97.

Does anyone know how to make a progressive dvd that runs at 23.98 or 24fps? And what program(s) did you use?

Thanks

That's what I mean, I'm trying not to do any pull down. But for some reasons when I try to author the dvd in Avid DVD or Encore 2, it always coverts it to 29.97.

I believe it'll burn it at 29.97 but add flags so that it plays in 24P in DVD players that will do that. Correct me if I am wrong someone?

Thanks Brandon for your input. What do you mean by adding flags? And what program did you make your progressive dvd on?

The content on the DVD is progressive, but it has to play out as NTSC, so the encoding to MPEG2 adds two flags:

1. Anamorphic 16:9 so that the DVD player will letterbox, center crop or display as 16:9 based on the preferences set in the DVD player based on the monitor being used.

2. 24 frame source. It will flag the frames so that the player creates a 2:3 pulldown insert to create NTSC. The same flag tells progressive DVD players what to do.

When a "progressive" DVD is played, there will be 2:3 pulldown. When paused or advanced frame by frame, you will only see the original full frame - no interlaced artifacts. If the encode was done correctly...

Thanks Michael for the explanation on how the flags work. How do you author the dvd with the flags? Like could you tell me the steps that you take on capturing the 24pA material to authoring a dvd it so it plays at 24fps? And what software you use?

Thanks

Great guide! Thanks for your help.

I authored the dvd in Encore 2 and used the Progressive transcode pre-set, but does it need to be transcoded again in Encore? Everytime I import the mpeg2 file it says it needs to transcode it to one of the Encore pre-sets. If i do need to re-transcode, does the Progressive 7mb VBR keep the frame rate the same?

Thanks again

I have never had to retranscode in Encore - when it did, it was only becuase the audio was added as uncompressed WAV. Make sure you encode as elementary streams and then combined in the Encore timeline as needed.

i have ran into the same problems as your have. if encore prompts you to do another transcode, thats a good indication that you didnt compress correctly in sorrenson. follow michaels instructions to a "t", it helped me figure all the 24p crap out. also, as a suggestion for next time, dont shoot 24Pa unless you are planning to spit that thing out onto film at some point.
