Progressive and Interlaced

Is there any objetive way to know whether some footage has been recorded in progressive or in interlaced mode?

Thanks a lot

If you place it back into the camera the onscreen display will tell you.
Most editing/effects software can tell if it's interlaced or not.
What frame rate are yo uchecking for? (24p, 24pa, 30p, 25p?) Each has a different look.
If you step through the frames of any footage you're likely to see odd/even lines during fast motion or a pan. The question is whether it can be removed to restore the pure progressive frames.

Thanks very much for the replies.

I think the onscreen display doesn't show wheter the footage is progressive or is not.

I shoot 25P (PAL) and the frame rate is always 25 fps.

If you shoot interlaced PAL, the rate is 50 fields per second.

If you shoot progressive PAL, the rate is 25 frames per second.

If you bring the footage into a progressive capable NLE, then you can look at an individual frame and see if it is comprised of 2 interlaced fields to make 1 frame. Look to an area with motion and you can confirm if you have progressive or interlaced video.

khmuse, I don't know if I've said it, but I'm awfully glad you're here. You're always giving excellent answers and are quick to do so. Thanks for being such a great resource to the community!

Thanks Barry for the kind words! I am more than honored by your comment. I find this forum to be an excellent resource and if I can on occasion make a useful contribution, then its the least that I can do in payment for all that I have gained from here.
