Production Model JVC HD100 in hand! No Issues!

Today (10AM, 09/07/05) I took delivery of my JVC HD100! After getting it unpacked, and batteries charged, I immediately setup to see if there were any "issues". And guess what, none! No split screen, even at high gain, and NO DEAD PIXELS! By the way on the outside, main seam of the box, is a sticker that says "JVC - This Unit Checked by Q.C. Department in U.S.A". They must be doing as Barry and others have mentioned, and QC'ing the cameras before delivery.

I have spent the day working with the camera, and fitting my Arri accessories (ie. MB-19 / FF5 HD / BP-6 bridge plate). I have not gotten too far into the menu, as of yet, but I will attempt to wrap my head around it tomorrow. The previous comments on ergonomics are all correct, and the camera handles beautifully. The lens dose breath a bit, but not as bad as I expected. Chromatic abberation is not too bad, and barely noticable in most cases. Again, the CA is not as bad as some of the initial HD100/101 reports. I managed to find two (2) additional JVC 3.8 AH batteries, which seem to take approx. 4+ hours to charge.

Once I get a better feel for the menu, and related image adjustment, I will start editing some footage, and I will post more info (pictures if Mod's will allow it!) as I move along.

respectfully,

Into, congrats on the new toy, hope brings countless hours of joy!

try a static rack focus, and tell me if that amount of "breathing" feels like you're zooming in?
I'm talking about a good depth of field rack, like from flowers in foreground to characters in background, not something only a few feet away.

have fun

That's great news!

I'm sure that the mods would encourage it! :)

I want to hear more dag blast it, more more more!!!! We will come get you, chain you to the cam and make you shoot for us unless I hear more! Oh, good news on the getting a good model. I am wondering how JVC missed this if all you guys could see it. That's pretty strange. Unless...

...they knew. I mean they knew there were issues but in a rush to take Sony down they just pushed it out to the market. What do you think?

It does seem pretty stupid of them! It was probably a problem that was not classed as any particular person's responsibility, so everyone just ignored it... that always seems to happen in big corporations.

Don't believe that. Over here in europe the JVC is AT THE VERY LEAST €2500 (+/- $3.500) more expensive than the SONY, and I think therefor the probably won't appeal to the same buyers (also the JVC is more of a MANUAL camcorder). I think this JVC won't be any popular with video-enthousiasts and small wedding videographers - and the SONY might still be. On the other hand: in the professional market there was no affordable option but the SONY until now. This is where the JVC will work it's magic, I think.

Previous JVC DV500, DV5000, perhaps even DV700 owners, SONY DSR300 owners, Panasonic AJ-D200, DVC200, D400 owners and the like will be candidate for the JVC (My guess)

Previous owners of the JVC GY-DV300, Pana DVX100, SONY PD150, DSR250, DSR200, VX1000-VX9000, might more likely stick with the SONY-solution (in terms of handling and auto-shooting-features

Exactly. The HD100 is a fully professional camera and is marketed as such. It's not a prosumer. I also think professional shoulder camera owners will be the main adopters, and DVX100 and PD170/Z1 users will stick with the prosumer stuff.

If that's true, I can't understand it! Why didn't they check the first cameras delivered in Europe? What are we, lab rats?
