I keep my cables and such in plastic tubs with hinged, interlocking lids. You can get them at the home improvement store, or get more heavy-duty versions from places like filmtools.com. I find the hard protection keeps cables from jumbling around too much, which makes them easier to sort when I start grabbing for setup.
If a bag is what you really want, Porta Brace sack packs aren't terribly expensive and are pretty heavy-duty.
plastic tubs as mentioned above (I got a 3 pack on sale at Menards last year - regardless they're not too expensive) - just find a style that works well for you, milk/dairy crates (filmtools, the container store, drillspot.com, etc) are great and easy to access, and I have beat the living crap out of a couple Porta Brace bags for years and they are still going strong. each has their own pros and cons (balance between access, durability, and so on) - and I'm sure they are other options out there as well depending on your needs.
Good old fashion tool bag from the hardware store. They have several sizes and are very cheap. I picked up a pair of Craftsmen for $19. at true value a couple of weeks ago.
Cables and stuff in the big one and a 100mm head with high hat and bits in the small bag for a slider.
If you guys don't know about Digital Juice's production bags, I HIGHLY recommend them. I have both the Production Bag and the Tripod bag. If you get on their email list, they have the bags on sale almost every other month. I got them for less than half of their regular MSRP. I took my home depot bags and stuffed them under the bed and haven't looked back since. They really are super roomy and of amazing build quality for the price.
I think I got each of mine for under $200 each. And if you know production bags, that's amazing! I think they had the Production bag for $130 over Christmas.
I went the home depot rout but the problem was they just didn't hold enough. And they weren't square, (The DJ production bag is.) The ability to stack these in the future and put other kit on top of them in the car is worth it alone. They also make two different square camera bags that would work great for camera body and lenses.
