Product video, belt sander

I bought my DVX specifically to make "product" videos for my business. These videos are intended for it to be streamed from the web.

After playing with the DVX for about a month, I made the first video ( approx 6 minutes:

If you can stand to watch it, Feel free to let me know what you think...honestly!

You won't hurt my feelings and I'm interested in getting better at this. I know there are lots of problems with this video...and I'll use the experience on the next one. I have about 20-25 hours in this one...and I'm tired of working on it.

Let me know your "first thoughts"...anything...what ever comes to mind.

OK...not only am I new to this video stuff...I'm aslo new to hosting. So, I just found the control to make the vimeo public...I think. Let me know.

I shot it in 60i...the F1 scene file.

Thoughts

1. Intro is too long without actually showing the product.

2. Entire video is shot at a downward angle. Part of the "magic" of TV and cinema is to offer a perspective other than we might see if we were a person standing there.

3. People make connections with faces. It would be good to see the operators face so we can make some connection to the work.

4. It would be good to configure the lighting to highlight the product. Instead we have everything lit flatly.

5. Watch your background. You want to keep light off of it because it is very distracting.

6. Clean up. You want this product to be showcased as a professional product. Clean things up or reduce light so that we can't see how worn the table and work area are.

7. Take the operators crotch out of the shots if possible.

8. It might be nice to punctuate the transitions with a head and shoulders shot of the operator to explain what is happening.

I know this sounds like a lot of stuff, but you've made a good start here. The moving camera is VERY good, the lighting though not set to highlight the product is at least quite bright. The colors and color balance look excellent. Image quality coming off the DVX is always going to be marvelous.

So lots of things right, and just some detail work to be done...
8. Some closeups and some

Perrone, That is terrific feedback! It all makes sense now....but stuff that I just didn't think about when shooting. I guess I was more concerned about camera settings, audio levels, time, distractions...and just trying to be creative. Yes, I do want to make "professional" looking videos.....and well, I'm just a beginner and have already learn a lot...but have a life time more to learn.

I sincerely thank you for the response!

Stay with it man, we're ALL learning! By the way, I made ALL those same mistakes when I first started too, so they were all familiar to me! LOL!

Wow I want one. How much do they cost ?

Nice job on the video, but definitely make a different intro. One other thing I would have added is what kind finish did it leave. This is key for tooling videos. :)

A different intro ehh?

What is wrong with the intro? Is it just painfully long...(it's about 10 seconds before we see the product)?

Or just not interesting...downright boring....plain stupid...irrelevant..?

I hope I don't sound defensive....I'm not and I truly appreciate the input.

I've stared at this video so many times now that it fails to invoke any type of emotion or response in me. I'm numb and have no imagination left for it.

Any thoughts, ideas or comments for a revised intro?

I'm also thinking about shooting a new scene of a close up of the operator..perhaps with a refelction of sparks in his safety glasses...with a POV cut showing what he is working on.

I put the video online on Friday...and over the weekend, we have sold out of our current inventory.

The results easily justified the cost of the DVX.

Online product video is really an powerful marketing tool for my business. I saw this a few years ago when I posted a homemade youtube clip. Our sales exploded from that clip on that particular machine.

Anyway...back to the intro....I'd like a common intro for all of my product videos...for Brand recognition I guess.

I'm just a dirt ball machinist..not a marketing wizard or Video pro.

Again, I sincerely appreciate the feedback!!

Wow Christopher! I just spent some time on your web site looking around. Terrific!!

In the SWAT piece, I really liked the intro...(or lack thereof) ...the way that I was imediately drawn into the action with a high level of energy. This seemed to really grab my interest. And the energy kept my nose just inches from the monitor. Then in comparison, The "Demo Reel" intro seemed drag on...... and I think this might be the point to the feedback on my intro. However ...your Demo Reel intro and my EF-48 intro are by no means comparable due to your high level of professional work.

Somehow, I want my videos to have the high energy that you have in SWAT. I've got to learn how...it's very cool!

Oh gosh...I have so much to learn...I can't wait!

"The "Demo Reel" intro seemed drag on......"

Not sure what you mean by my intro dragging on, It's just one title ?

I didn't ask for criticism on my reel and I can see that you took offense to it. Sorry if my statement was a little bold, but you simple asked for feedback and I tried to help you. Stated in your post, "You won't hurt my feelings and I'm interested in getting better at this."

This is why I posted. :)

As for my demo reel, this is in the works. My reel is a bit too long and should have been shortened awhile ago but, I just didn't have any time at all to do so.

Nice VMC machine BTW!

Hee hee....thanks for the note. It can be difficult to communicate effectively online. My fault.

My feelings are totally not hurt and I sincerely appreciate the comments..what ever they may be.

I truly didn't intend to critique your work...I was basically thinking out loud in reference to my own work. In reference to my comments, I was comparing your SWAT to your Demo Reel. Both pieces being very much different from each other, I was using them as a gage or yard stick to figure out why my own intro is failing. I certainly didn't use appropriate words..."dragging on". I've been misunderstood in my inability to effective communicate with written words. I'm sure if we chatted in person, everything would have a much different meaning.

So you are a machinist also? I've had this VMC for about 4 years...it's a private labeled machine from a local machinery dealer/broker. It's my money maker. 40"x20" travel, 20 tool changer, 20 hp, 10,000 rpm.

My wife and I get down to Sunny SW Florida a few times a year....Don Pedro Island, just north of Boca Grand.

Thanks again for the feedback! There's absolutly no hard feelings from this side of the monitor :)

Sincerely, Rob

I have no interest in power tools and I watched the whole video with pleasure. I agree with the feedback from others, the only addition is a pop screen for plosives in the voice over and interchanging with the actor talking to the camera for variety...maybe with a little humor.

Intro ideas? Maybe a series of moving stills of the product timed to the rock music.

Oh, and a bed of backround music would be less stark.

Thanks for the encouragement! You have me fired up!

I would of liked to see some live interviews in the piece instead of a whole narrative.
Also, maybe a different choice in fonts.
All in all it was very informative, good enough with some little adjustments to be an infomercial on pay TV.
