I'm sure you've seen the video. Can this be done in AE CS4? Seemingly so. 3d isn't necessary, is it? I have a basic idea of most of the shots, but I'm curious as to how it's done correctly.

That's all Trapcode Stroke and some Particular. No 3D needed outside of AE.

Stroke makes sense. I've never used it, though. I've only used Particular. I don't see that in the video. What part is Particular used in?

i'd imagine it's the little flecks and shines that come flying off the ribbon as it makes it's way through the scene.

As Andrew said certainly looks like Trapcode Stroke and Particular along with some possible matchmoving on few of the shots. In the beginning some white 'spheres' emit from the stroke that looks like particular to me almost at default look lol.
