producing own score/sound affect question

Hi
I'm film student and would like to produce my own soundtrack for any type of independent works I will be doing.

I do have lil bit of background in piano so I can read music notes and what not but my quetion is how to connect keyboard to computer and what type of music software is available out there?

(keyboard, I mean those Yamaha or Casio keyboard... not the typing ones haha)

I did find out about UX-16 cable and just wondering if this is the way everyone is connecting their keyboard to PC or Mac. (I have both os)

also, Garage band seems pretty easy to use.. anyone using that?

GarageBand is a good entry-level starting place. The best solution is a USB-based keyboard controller. It'll allow you to compose on keys in real time, plus you can layer original tracks with loops and build some pretty impressive sounds.

10s/ get a manual for what? i dont have keyboard yet

C2V/ can you recommend me a good USB-based keyboard controller?

Get a USB/ MIDI keyboard (Yamaha, Casio etc...both are just fine) and use Garage Band as a starter, study the manual for the connection setup to your computer. A good controller could be an M-Audio keyboard. It depends upon what you're after. I have an M-Audio 88 weighted key model (monster) that somewhat resembles a real piano. For normal synth work a 61 or 76 key, unweighted is fine. MIDI controllers do not make sound, they have no internal sound generating capability. The virtue of the Casios and such are they generate their sounds internally and don't need to be hooked up to a computer to create sound, so you can take it with you and just play without all the computer/connection business going on. Stop by a music store such as a, Guitar Center store and browse.

For future efforts you might consider a firewire connection set up. A firewire connection to the computer will allow audio recording as well as MIDI recording with low latency (performance delay) while recording. This is required for recording microphone performances while playing back previous recordings and MIDI recordings for a track by track recording approach, vs. the whole band at once recording approach. It allows the performer to sync their current performance to previous recorded performances.

10s/ thanks for the detail explanataion, that was really helpful! I i will definitely look into M-audio keyboards. I am sort of hesistant towards firewire but if I can find something with both firewire and usb connection that be pretty good.. I can't wait to get everything set up and running!

thanks again.

soo.. i'm looking into gettnig firewire audio interface plus their keyboard.. i think axiom series will do for me. Little bit more complicated than I thought.. this sound set-up, also the budget just doubled.
