I bought a super 8 a couple years ago and I thought I would never use it b/c I was hooked on dv. But after seeing alot of videos using super 8 and how good it looks I'ved decided to give my super 8 a chance. After shooting the footage I know I would send it off to get processed but how would I go about getting my footage in to a editing software would I have them transfers it to mini dv? Totally lost in this situation. Thanks ahead of time.

Send it to www.yalefilmandvideo.com. Tell them you want it transferred to miniDV (include a tape, otherwise they'll charge you for a tape, and you can buy it for less of course). They do a great job, they're the kings of Super 8.

Unless, of course, they find your material objectionable. I have refused to do business with Yale since they refused to transfer a friend of mine's avant-garde super-8 films, deeming them offensive.

Sure, it's a private business, and they're free to discriminate against subject matter they disagree with, but given their large, archly-conservative list of subject matter they won't deal with, it's a wonder they're still in business (just imagine any pro 35mm Hollywood lab practicing a similar policy...). People may complain about Pro8mm's prices but at least they don't judge you based on whether they agree or disagree with your art.

After hearing my friend's story, I knew that I, with two super-8 movies satirizing religion, one featuring some gruesome murders, and another about a man committing suicide, shouldn't even bother with Yale. Maybe if your movie's about a soccer-playing dog or someone attending Sunday school, you'll have a better chance.

Judge for yourself, based on their "subject material policy":

"SUBJECT MATERIAL POLICY

We realize that the artist has full and total choice of expression. However, we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. As a policy, we do not and will not process, print, repair, or transfer any film containing: nudity, pornography, sexual acts (either real or simulated), lewdness, satanic, occultic, religiously blasphemous, exploitative of children, debasement of women, containing S & M, anything illegal, or in any way extremely offensive to us. Nor will we participate in the desensitization of or the glorification of killing, rape, violence, gore, suicide, torture, profanity, etc.… whether in visual or audio form."

Re: Processing super 8 film?

If you have a MiniDV camcorder AND you either cannot afford or do not need a professional copy to that format, you can DIY. All you need is a projector and a 'Copy Kit'. These used to be easily available when 8mm was in vogue. No idea if you can still get them, but making one is simple. The components include only a first surface mirror of suitable size and a decent translucent plastic sheet or ground glass, also of suitable size. You would need to make a support structue also, but a cardboard box would do nicely.
The Copy Kit I own has a bad mirror but I purchased a new (and much better) one on eBay.
If interested I would send a couple of pics ...

Re: Processing super 8 film?

i still shoot Super8 and i send all of my rolls to Dwaynes http://k14movies.com/ for developing. i've dealt with Pro8mm (super8sound) and they are grossly overpriced and their customer service is atrocious.

Dwayne's will get your film back to you within a week. Kodak will send your film all the way to their processor in Switzerland!

if i am not mistaken, Dwaynes is the only processor in the US. Even Yalefilms sends their stuff to either Dwayne's or Kodak Switzerland.

To transfer to MiniDV, i highly recommend Roger Evans of "Moviestuff" http://www.moviestuff.tv

He designed a whole new system for transfers that equals a Rank-Cintel/Davinci transfer and it is a heck of a lot cheaper.

BTW, my Super8 cameras consist of a Yashica Electro-8 LD6 which i've owned since 1978, and a Russian Quarz Kinoflex.

i bought my Kinoflex on Ebay for $30.00, but Pro8mm will buy these cheap (but reliable) cameras and resell them for $350.00!!

Re: Processing super 8 film?

IINM, Kodak doesn't even send their own film to their Switzerland plant anymore, they send it to Dwayne's. So if you buy the K40 with the prepaid processing, Dwayne's will get the job.
