Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

To go back to something for a second....I have never understood this and most likely never will...but if I shoot in squeeze mode...make a anamorphic dvd using dvd studio pro....My footage will look 16x9 on a widescreen tv and have black bars on a 4:3 tv....in other words my footage will look correct on both tvs and not streched out....Please school me on this, also what are the limitations of this....I know resolution, but is it that noticable...Thanks once again, this board is the best

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

resolution would be fine from strecth mode..its not a big difference on small screen viewing.   ..and the DVD player will automatically letterbox it to play on a 4:3 tv if the player is set up right. sounds like youve got it under control.

just know that the work is donr by the DVD player..the dvd is flagged as 4:3 material or 16:9 material when you make the DVD ..so  if you set up your player to play on a 16:9 tv. it will play 16:9 stuff full screen.  which would make the 16:9 stuff fill the 16:9 display.. and pillarbox 4:3 stuff.(black bars on sides with 4:3  in the center)   , and if you set it up to play on a 4:3 tv it will play 4:3 stuff full screen and letterbox 16:9 stuff (shrink it to fit in center of screen, and put black on top + bottom).

so the DVD player will play either aspect ratio fine on any TV as long as you have it set up right and tell it correctly what kind of display its outputting to.

hope that helps.
:)

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

So shooting in squeeze is alright, because it seems as though on these boards, shooting in squeeze is a no no...But as long as you make the dvd anamorphic I will be ok and after that if it looks weird on either tv just play with the dvd player....I was under the impresion that shhoting in squeeze would only look good on a widescreen tv, and that it would look streched on a 4:3 tv....But that really is not the case it will look fine on a 4:3 tv maybe even better because it is being compressed....well that seems to save me a lot of touble....correct me if I am wrong

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

yes.. if it displays incorrectly,, your DVD player is not set up right, or you mad the DVD wrong..
but yes. everything will look fine and correct on a 4:3 tv , and possibly better than it looks on a 16:9 TV pending the tv your playing it on when its compressed/letterboxed.

you can always just simply shoot one minute of squeeze footage, and make a one minute  16:9 DVD, and test it out to see excactly how it will look for you  ;).

Squeeze mode is quite good at what it does, but only if you abide by two rules: shoot in progressive-scan mode, and shoot with THIN line detail. Using interlaced or thick will make Squeeze mode look way soft.

There are better-looking ways to get 16:9, which is why you may think we're frowning on Squeeze mode, but I actually think Squeeze is pretty good.

I was under the impresion that shhoting in squeeze would only look good on a widescreen tv, and that it would look streched on a 4:3 tv....But that really is not the case it will look fine on a 4:3 tv maybe even better because it is being compressed....
Only if you're playing it back from a DVD. If you're playing back from the computer, from DV tape, from VHS, or broadcasting it, then yes, squeeze mode will look stretched on a 4:3 TV, and will only look "right" on a widescreen TV.

The DVD player has a built-in aspect ratio converter that takes care of the widescreen/4:3 discrepancy. So if you're playing back from a DVD player, you'll be okay. But if you play it back from any other source, it will *not* look proper on both types of televisions.

And no, squeeze will never look better on a 4:3 TV than letterbox would.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Hello everyone, wonderful tutorial, and I can't wait to try it, I was just wondering if Vegas 5 supports rendering the TIFF frames, because I can't seem to find it, and I'm not as technical as some of the posts on this board, though I'm trying to learn, if someone could help me out, it would be much appreciated, thanks.

I don't believe you can export a sequence of still frames, which is one thing that I find really annoying. Perhaps David or Spot or Gary know?
I believe there is a limit of 1170 frames per batch so you may need to do multiple batches). EDIT: I have since imported more than 1800 images without a problem....so not sure what the limit is.
I contacted their support and they said the limit is only based on memory. They didn't specify any numbers or give details on how much overhead per entry (image) in the batch there occurs. So, if you have a souped up machine with plenty of memory you should be able to process a very large number.

I also checked if they supported passing command line arguments to the program so that it could be automated. They indicated that they had no support for that at this time.

Yes, donbarzini, that's right. This is the 1.33 adapter. Actually the problem with the "old" one isn't the zoom range but the wignetting. Not to use the last 10-15% of the zoom isn't to bad but I have to start from 10-15% because the wignetting. But I don't zoom much, rather move the camcorder and the rest of the range is very good. I just wonder how is it with this new adapter.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

The new adapter should be much better. You should be able to get crystal-clear, razor-sharp anamorphic footage at all zoom settings.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Hello djecta, I would like to thank you the to look for and to investigate in the improvement of the image.
I use a DVX in format PAL. I would like to know that new size should place in the photozoom settings for PAL (720 x 640 NTSC)

thanks.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

avr,

For footage shot in letterbox mode on the camera, resize in Photozoom Pro to 720x768 and for footage you shot with squeeze, or with the anamorphic lens or where you have already cropped the letterbox off in another program, the size would be 720x576.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, just doing some math.

You don't do anything with the anamorphic footage.
The size for the squeeze footage should be 1040x576 and than import it back to the 720x576 widescreen project.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Disjecta, thanks for your great post. It is great information and I will have to read it over many times to get it. I have only had my camera a short while and just recently started playing with squeeze mode. Your information has helped greatly. Thanks again.

Laszlo, where did you get the 1040 number?

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

So, is it safe to say that letterbox: uprezzed via photozoom is SUPERIOR in quality (I know that's subjective) to SQUEEZE, if 16:9 is the final outcome? What if we want to go to film??

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

I don't know that I'd say it's superior. It may be. I think Disjecta believes it definitely is.

If you're not using the anamorphic, then for a film transfer I'd shoot letterbox and up-rez to PhotoZoom for your 16:9 release, but let the film transfer house up-rez the letterbox footage for the film release.
