Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Btw. Squeeze mode isn't a correct definition. It is a simple cropping.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Well, no, Squeeze Mode is actually a digital stretching. It crops off the top and bottom, but then it stretches the image to become 480 pixels high (in NTSC mode).

Letterbox mode simply crops off the top and bottom -- or would the more proper term be "clips" off the top and bottom. Squeeze starts with the letterbox image but then stretches it. Would have been more accurate if they'd named it "Stretch Mode".

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Well, yes. The Squeeze Mode doesn't squeeze more information into the picture. It just cropping the nativ 4:3 and streches the image as you mention. But this is a misleading definition. You don't find it as a definition in Sony's menu, only Wide Screen.

The letterboxing actually not cropping anything, just making a mask, black bars. The camcorder is not using the entire imagesensor. If you make a 4:3 video and import it to the NLE's timeline and you add an overlay track with the same sized black bars as you get from your camcorder, than you get the same letterboxed video.

What ever. It is only a definiton question.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

So the best quality is shooting in 4:3 no letterbox then matte in post. So the only way to get widescreen footage actually looking right on both types of tv's you need an adaptor....so for the most part it is much smarter to shoot 4:3 and matte..Just for the look of course...

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Not exactly. The in-camera letterbox mode does exactly the same thing. It creates a matte above and below to simulate the widescreen aspect.

Because this is still in 4x3 mode, there is no stretching or distortion involved, so there is no resolution loss.

You would shoot 4x3 and then matte in post if you wanted the option of having a 4x3 and 16x9 version of what you shot. Maybe for now you want the 4x3 version but in the future you may decide to create a widescreen version. Shooting regular 4x3 will give you that option.

If you are creating anamorphic widescreen footage, as in the technique in this thread, you can burn it to DVD as a 16x9 disk and it will display correctly on both widescreen and 4x3 TVs.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

You can cover your LCD with a black tape or something just to mask out the black bars and shoot in 4:3. Than you get a footage you can use in any cases. This tape trick can help you framing the video.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

I was just about to purchase the anamorphic adaptor before this thread. Now I'm not so sure.

Does anybody have any side-by-side examples of DVX 4x3 "letterboxed" footage uprezzed using PhotoZoom Pro vs. DVX anamorphic adaptor footage uprezzed using PhotoZoom Pro?

Never hurts to ask, right? ;)

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

You'll probably find info on that in Barry's new guide.

By the way, don't use black tape on your LCD because it will blank out some of the information in your display. Use a semi-transparent tape. That way, you can see the display readout and the guides at the same time.. :D

Anybody did this on the viewfinder too? I tried but failed. This seems to be microsurgery.

You wouldn't up-rez anamorphic footage with PhotoZoom, because it's already 16:9. This technique is all about making anamorphic footage from 4:3 letterboxed footage. So the question is, anamorphic adapter or 4:3-uprezzed/anamorphosized by PhotoZoom.

And no, I don't have examples of this, I discuss it a little in the guide but the DVD's already done...

I just tried the DonBarzini method and it works perfectly in FCP. Hooray. ;D ;D

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

I don't know how the Panasonic anamorphic adapter works and how the quallity is, I guess it is a good one. Maybe it is better than the Century's one for Pd150. I'm working with a Century one.
I can tell you, you go into an other world if you are working with anamorphic lens. Let say if you are framing a person walking on the street. With this letterboxing you have to zoom out to get the image you want between the black bars. If you have an anamorphic lens than you can fill the whole LCD with it. Everything gonna be there in the 16:9 picture.

This metode with scale to size in Photozoome Pro is a god one and give you a god result but if you gonna keep your DVX for a long time and you have the money than buy an anamorphic lens. The panasonic lens is different from the Century's. You can use almost the whole zoom. The Century's has a limitation. Ca. 15-20% of the zoom range is useless. But it opens a whole new world to take the picture.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Century used to make a less-expensive adapter, I think that's the one you're referring to. They make a new one now, it's much more expensive but gives even better results. If you're happy with the old one, you'll probably really like the new one!

They're also making one for the DVX someday soon, maybe in the next six months or so, which promises exquisite quality. It'll be expensive, but it promises to overcome all the focus/aperture limitations of the Panasonic anamorphic adapter.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

I am saving up for that one, if it proves itself, I will probably purchase that along with the Firestore FS-4.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

I own that too for my Sony DSR-250. It gives really nice wide angle shots but if you zoom in it breaks up. I also had a really hard time controlling depth of field....Overall, it's use was limited for me.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

yes , you can't use more then 75% of the zoom. I goes from the 15% -> 90%. Have you more light than goes up to 95%, than out of focus. But the 1.33 has 100% zoom.
