Problems

I bought a used 100b with 30 hours on it about a week ago. I myself have put about 15 hours on it so far. It works great except that I was reviewing some footage with the camera in vcr mode and the sound would cut out from time to time and the picture would get a little messed up. I reviewed the same footage again and it would happen in different spots on the tape than the previous viewing. I then reviewed another tape that I shot a few days before. That footage was perfect, sound and image.

Do I need to clean the heads? Are the tapes faulty?

Is the camera messed up? What does this sound like?

Thanks so much all

Sounds like dirty heads. Put in a new tape and fast forward, then backward. This is the cheapo way of throwing debris off your cameras record heads.

I find it a good idea not to use the dvx transport for anything except recording. Do all your reviews with a small cheap camera or dvRack or on a NLE. Rewinding tape with the DVX has always eaten my tapes and I quickly learned to find an alternative way

Actually I was going to review footage on a cheapo dv but the sound did not work at all. I was using 24p so i just thought the cheapo couldn't understand the way the dvx records the sound. I freaked out and i played some of the footage on my 100b and it worked fine. Now the sound and image mess up a bit on the 100b

yeps, try to download off the tape immediately... cause tape sucks. Cant handle the stretching pulling etc form Rewind <----> FF.

bwest, your tape got eaten? Your camera might have some issues. I never have problems rewinding and fast forwarding. It's certainly not as good as a pro cleaning, but in a pinch, it works.

I learned this from early archive posts back in 2005. Though the dvxb supposedly has a new transport, Ive always found tape bad for reviewing via the RW <---->FF STREEEEEEEEEEETCH.

I think the DVXA gave the early Firestores legs as a fledgling business
