Problems with HD100 + Vegas

I posted this here because it does pertain specifically to the HD100 or at least HDV footage, the editing thereof... wasn't sure if it should go here or the Vegas forum, though this info will probably be helpful to future HD100 users who use Vegas... anyway...

First of all, my rig is a dual Xeon 3.0, 1.5 gigs ram, 256mb Radeon X800, I am capping my HD footage to a new 400 gig HD 7200 RPM, using onboard IEEE... haven't had any problems with it until using HDV. I'm running Vegas 6.0c

I start a new proj in Vegas, there is no HDV 720p 24p setting so I choose 720p 30p then change the framerate to 23.976 (instead of 24p cause when I capped some files I notice in their properties they were actually 23.976 so I guess they are using pulldown). I capture my footage, everything seems to be going fine.

Then I start to cut things together. When I view clips in the trimmer, it plays back fine, but then when I add a clip to the timeline, many clips seem to be dropping out and I'm getting these red splotches over sections of the clips in the timeline. If I try to drag a selection I trimmed out with the trimmer, it plays back properly in trimmer, then when I bring it in, it messes up... When I play the clips outside of Vegas with another media player, the clips seem fine.

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Also, I was able to use my Sony LCD HDTV as an external monitor via camera IEEE and Composite Outs, but it stopped working the other day and I haven't gotten it to work again. I have the IEEE setting on the HD100 set to HDV since it's an HDV project... I know the stuff is fatter so maybe I have a crappy onboard IEEE bridge? (maybe a 6300 southbridge that can't handle it?) if so that would really suck since I'd have to buy a new motherboard or some other solution like the Canopus products, but I'd rather not spend 1500 bucks. Plus this doesn't seem to be the case since, btw, when I view the captured files from my hard disk via a media player, they are completely fine.

Any help/ideas/feedback/jokes at my expense are appreciated.

It stopped working the day you plugged the HD100 in, in HDV mode. Vegas outputs a DV preview, not HDV. HDV cannot now, nor will it ever be able to, preview over firewire.

If you want a firewire preview again, set the HD100 to DV mode and set the switch to DV mode. But recognize that the preview you're getting is downrezzed to DV, regardless of what your project is.

Thanks Barry, that certainly makes sense. I guess I was confused or hallucinating when I thought I was getting an HD preview going.

So to get an accurate preview on an external HD monitor I would need to hook up the Sony LCD TV as a second computer monitor and use it as Vegas's preview device, or get another solution like the Canopus HDV package (has anyone used this, if so how much of an improvement in performance is there, specifically with Vegas)... anyone know of other options or has other recommendations?
