Problems with FS100...Please help

This is Joe from Zacuto and I need a little help. Someone has called me and has a firestore that is acting funny. While recording, sometimes the FS100 will just stop recording on its own. Has anyone had this happen? And what is a solution?

Next step...while connecting the FS100 to a mac, I am not able to see all the clips in the drive when it appears on the desktop. I have watched the footage through the HVX200 and it seems to jump around from clips from time to time. For example, a clip shot five hours ago will play after a clip shot only one hour ago?....

so what do you all think this means??....why does the FS100 have a mind of its own and stops recording? why are the clips out of order on the drive when I play back???......why can't I see all the clips when I hook the drive up to the mac?.......

If someone solve my problems...I will take care of them with some love from Zacuto.....This has been the first problem I have yet to figure out....I usually know people that have the answers...but I can't get a hold of them at the moment.

so any help would be much appreciated....

Thanks,
Joe

Hi, Joe

I would make certain that you customer has performed the Organize P2 function to make certian the clips are organized in MXF format.

As far as the FS-100 stopping, first thing I would do is reset the unit using the reset menu option. I would also make certain that all firmware updates to the Firestore have been run.

If these do not work, then I would call Focus.

Matt from Focus does frequent these boards and he might be able to help.

Thanks for the info...I have performed the P2 Organize....and believe the unit is up to date...I just can't reset anything because there is valuable footage on the drive...

Thanks and call us if you need anything.

If I do the repair with footage on the drive....will it delete it????....cause I still dont have the footage in a safe place.,...

Hi Joe,

First, I would back up the footage just to be on the safe side (mount it to a computer and copy the contents of the FS-100 to a local drive or an external drive (USB2 or FireWire - FireWire will be slow if on the same bus). As Ned has mentioned, make sure you have the latest FS-100 firmware loaded (it is available for download at http://www.focusinfo.com/support/ under software downloads). The latest version is 2.0. Also, make sure you have done a system reset after you have loaded the latest firmware. Loading new firmware will not destroy the content on the drive, so do not worry about that.

As others have mentioned, please also make sure that you have done an Organize P2. This puts the recorded footage into the P2 Directory Structure. If you did further recordings after doing an Organize P2, the playlist would be out of order as some clips would have been renamed to the P2 structure, and others would have the regular file names. This might be the issue. Also, after doing an Organize P2, clips will appear in the CONTENTS folder on disk. If you have not done an Organize P2, clips will appear in a folder on disk marked something like 20060817-132321-01. This folder name is basically derived from the date and time the recording began. Clips are stored here for efficiency reasons before Organize P2 is done. The rule of thumb is that organize P2 should only be done after all recordings have been completed.

Once you have loaded the latest firmware and done a System reset, select Repair Disk from the UTILITIES menu. This will look for any errors on the drive and repair the clip so that they can be imported. Once you have done this, do an Organize P2. Then re-check your clips.

Are you running the unit on battery or from the AC adapter? What editing system are you using? Also, if you can email me the log.txt file from the LOG folder on disk as well as the XML files in the CONTENTS/CLIP folder, that may help us understand what happened. Email me at mmcewen at focusinfo.com.

Hope this helps,

Matt
