Problems with DVX200

I agree, it shouldn't. Mine doesn't do that and I had my editor/engineer double-check on his 4K monitor. No ghosting on interiors or exteriors.

Just a guess, but something to do with shutter speed being too long.....? Set longer than the framerate?
The DVX200 has an automatic shutter setting, which is annoyingly simple to activate. It gives you no warning that it is in auto-shutter. The only way you know you're in auto-shutter is if there's no shutter speed displayed(!) So you'd have absolutely zero idea what actual shutter speed is being used by the camera, if it were in auto shutter, and you also wouldn't know that you were in auto shutter mode. It is a serious oversight in the display and I've asked them to correct it. So it's possible that the camera may actually be in a slow shutter at this point, and the user wouldn't even know.

Framerate is 25 so shutter is generally 50.
Only if the display literally says "1/50" on it. If it doesn't say that, then you'd have no idea what the actual shutter speed might be. I'm not saying that's the issue here, I'm saying that you shouldn't assume, because the camera doesn't report when it's in auto shutter, so if you don't specifically see it displaying "1/50", then you don't have any reasonable expectation that it would actually be 1/50.

Is there a setting that controls noise reduction other than the obvious detail coring/high sens mode etc? Most of that stuff is disabled in V-Log...
No, the settings for noise reduction are coring and high sens.

If I was to guess anything that might be causing some shadowing, it'd be High Sens, which employs more aggressive noise reduction in exchange for doubling the brightness. Have you noticed a difference in behavior between NORM and HIGH SENS?

Hi Barry,

I say generally because that's the state I would have it in normally unless I'm doing something creative with slower shutter or shooting fast objects with higher shutter. Everything is manual including the shutter and I see 1/50 displayed. Lots of cameras I've worked with do this including my trusty z5 so I'm used to it.

High sens is rarely on unless I really need it, but in any case, the same thing happens with or without. I think if it's this head-scratching (and the latest firmware date 1.29 didn't correct it) I'd say I have a faulty unit. Process of elimination has eliminated everything!

I'm banging my head against the wall about this. My dealer is predictably unhelpful and the Panasonic rep here says "that's just the camera" which I think belies the fact that he doesn't have a clue, because I'm not sure that this level o ghosting s even acceptable n this price range. Sure it's not an FS7, but I've never worked with this problem before even in the fixed lens small sensor range. So I'm not sure what my next move is here...

I believe I have the same ghosting symptom, although it is with fast motion. I'm set to 1/100 shutter.

i also share your complaint about headset audio monitoring. I have the headset gain up to 30 and I cannot hear in noisy environments.

I notice the ghosting most in low light, and mostly in out of focus areas. It seems like a motion artifact to me.

So what we're saying is that it's symptomatic of the camera and not of specific units? In which case I think (and hope) it's something that can be fixed via firmware update. I don't recall seeing this when I first bought the camera, but after the first update, where the "black dot noise" was eliminated, I started to notice. In camera noise reduction perhaps? The FS5 will for sure get a fix for that awful blocking. I'm still working with the camera, mainly baked in. There's movement smudging but not terrible. A wishlist for me would be -

1. Thanks for the V-Log assist fix. It now stays up after pressing the button, now allow it to stay on the screen after pressing record! The FS7 does it!
2. A fix for the motion blur, visual echo or whatever you want to call it.
3. Audio monitoring improvement! I want to hear what I'm recording! At volume 32, even though the manual warns against listening at full vol, an OAP wouldn't hear a thing! My Sennheisers want some action! Thankfully the audio levels have been accurate thus far.
4. I'm not an auto white balancer, but when following a subject from florescent lit indoors to outdoors, I want to know it has my back if needs be...it's not at all accurate.

That's all. The picture is great, the weight is fine, the stabilizer is awesome and I'm chuffed with the lens.

Yes. I'm not 100% happy about that but so much has changed about the look for the better that I'm trying not to notice it so much...

I agree: the DVX200 is a terrific camera and well worth the price. It would be nice if this artifacting could be better controlled, like in the menu, a setting of some kind. I know it shows up in 4:2:2 10 bit uncompressed, so I don't know what's going on. DVX200 as a whole? Totally usable. And we're the only ones that see it: the videographers. It's more difficult to see in properly lit situations but is a bugger in low light. But, like any camera, don't starve it of light and you'll be fine.

I see it sometimes in the darker portions of the frame in broad daylight with ND filters engaged. It's noise reduction. If there was a way of controlling how much is applied in camera it would greatly help, but I don't think enough people have complained about it for it to be a priority at this point. As Barry said, they're going to stop updating it soon and concentrate on other things, so we might just be living with it.

My experience with this camera now with the latest firmware is totally different. I barely see noise anymore, just the smallest amount sometimes in the dark areas, but it is more than acceptable. Only if what I have shot has a lot of dark scenes will I use Red Giant denoiser at a minimum level and "boom" all gone. I think it would still be fine without doing NR but since I have the program I will use it once in a while, but not all the time. When I use my Atomos Ninja Flame at 10bit 4:2:2, I see no noise at all. Like the rest of you, I wish this camera came out of the box with firmware 1.65 but its there now so I am happy.

Hi John. It's not a noise problem, it's with the automatic in-camera, non-adjustable noise reduction that produces a faint ghosting effect in high contrast or darker environments.

To be completely honest with you I don't see any faint ghosting in the dark areas. I just scanned a couple different projects and looked at the darker scenes - nothing...

Mostly visible when shooting in V-Log. But as I said, I'm trying not to pay attention to it. It's a great camera in many other ways and it just caught me in a post-buying oh-god-what-the-hell-is-that kind of way. It's possible it's lessened with the updates, but it is there sometimes.

I will definitely look more closely now. I have only had fantastic reviews from my clients so far. As long as that keeps happening I'm good. I have just started shooting some V-log with Lut's applied in the Atomos Ninja Flame. I will go back and look at that stuff for sure. Thanks for the info on this.
